I joined Big4 tax (International) few months ago; and I’ve worked on a couple of projects but minor. I avg. around 5-20 hours/week for billable/external work depending on the week. I keep asking for work from other teams too, but everyone says they will give work but nothing so far. They say work is slow for the moment. I’m mainly worked with one team on a couple of small projects & got good reviews. My utilization is probably around 10-30%. What do I do? I don’t want to be left behind others.

Welcome to B4 lol. Don’t worry in busy season you get more work.

There will be a moment in the near future where you will wish to be in the position you are now. I know it can be frustrating if you look at your peers, but don’t worry. Once you get a role on a client engagement, the work will be recurring. All a matter of time…

Enjoy it for now. It is the holiday and everyone is on vacation mode. Things will probably pick up in Jan. You can ask your counselor or supervisor to put you on their engagements.

Service lines are busy at different times and produce different work. For example, federal tax tends to be high volume compliance work resulting in higher utilization.

like

Stop worrying. Take the extra time to read up and skill up. Nobody give AF about your utilization before busy season.

don’t worry you’ll get there. i was on the same boat and until now I see other associate who started about the same time as I did and got no project & others who has full schedule. reach out also to your resource manager. i kept asking for projects and was always told to just enjoy this moment cause you’ll never be back at this slow again. lol

Happy to refer you

Just enjoy. You’ll be reminiscing in about a month or two

Don’t worry, it’ll pick up. In ITS, we are typically doing some planning projects at year end if you’re desperate for work, but unless you want to be working on Christmas I would hold off until the new year!

hey, I joined Deloitte in June 2020 as an GPS SA analyst, I just staffed on internal project only providing me adjusted utilization. Now my standard util is 40 and my adjusted is 105... and this project last in another month... by then my standard util might be 20.. will my promotion be affected by this? My target promotion year on TOD is 2022. My manager said we might sell to client and extend this project in September but nothing guaranteed.

Third question: I’m new in the DC area, are PDMs invited to firm socials? Trying to make friends! Thanks in advance

Community, I’ve been meeting with a lot of people regarding next steps in my career. One of the best pieces of advice I received is to avoid micro-managing executive staff (agency leadership), as it puts downward and unwelcome pressure on people’s managers and ultimately oneself. Based on your experience in the last 2 years are there:
- Agencies you would steer clear from because their leadership micromanages
- Agencies you would recommend because their leadership gives you room to grow

Thx 🙏🏼
