I judge people who have “I love Paris”paraphernalia in their house. The Eiffel Tower pictures & posters, Je t’aime & French words posters, etc. It’s so tacky. And I’ve never understood it. It’s right up there with adults who wear Mickey Mouse & Disney clothing, have Disney obsessions (a license plate holder, bumper stickers and window decals?) and have words on their walls.

My husband and I went to Paris for the first time a few years ago and bought a print off a street artist that has a couple standing in front of the Eiffel Tower. We have it framed and hung up. Does this count? I’d like to know your limits on this.

It counts. I saw the Taj Mahal, arguably more impressive in person than the Eiffel Tower. Yet I don’t have a picture of it framed in my living room.

I had to go to a Disney wedding for a family member. Picture it: full on adult woman in the pumpkin carriage, escorted by Cindarella's coachman...the rings walked down the aisle in a glass slipper. For real. The Disney fan turned Disney bride is a breed of its own. That trip was made bearable by the bars of Downtown Disney; the only redeeming part of the park.

It was not enjoyable. Her mother scolded people for snickering at the theatrics. And, get this--We found out that one of the perks (?) of booking there is that all guests are supposed to get a day pass to the park for the wedding day, as you need to gain access to the park in order to get into the wedding. Disney gifted the bride and groom the guest passes to distribute. After the fact we found out she kept them for herself. We learned about this after she made everyone pay for their own passes to ATTEND THE WEDDING.

I also love living in an empty void surrounded by my own thoughts. I don't need evidence of past, experiences and reminders of my travels. Nothingness is the truest form of beauty. Nothing matters because matter is all an illusion.

I’m thinking the Venn of “people who have been to and love Paris” and “people with faux Parisian crap” is one with very little overlap.

Totally get your angle here and to an extent, I agree with you. BUT....these things probably bring those people a lot of joy and yeah it’s totally tacky but who cares? Let them be their tacky happy selves!

I judge folks with “word art” in general.

like

I'd guess the issue isn't with the items or francophile vibe, but how generic they've become in so many homes / restaurants / coffee shops / hotel lobbies. It's like a bio section that says "I like to travel, I love music, and have a family." Ok? All true...but none of that REALLY tells us anything about you.

That was a lot of words just to say you never get laid.

I’m admitting that I judge and I confessed it. I think this is a question of taste and often people who love Disney/Mickey/Paris shit have none of it. I am interested in taste as a sociological question. Like clearly people on the UWS who make over 200K are also not likely at all to obsess over Disney and not have fake Paris shit. Why are taste and class inextricably linked? And also, all that Disney shit is ugly and tacky. Anyone can see that. And yet, it sells like hot cakes. 🤷🏼‍♀️ and I am not saying that only wealthy people have good taste. I’m just fascinated by how vastly different groups of people responds to the same thing. Like the Kia Gerbils commercial. People loved that basura. I think it’s trash. This has always been a puzzle to me. I read about it and find it just begets more questions.

I agree on the Disney thing, but remind myself if it makes them happy, who am I to judge?

Huh?

This post is reminding me what a snotty privileged echo chamber ad people live in. For people who theoretically make their living off being empathetic and insightful, some of y'all have a long way to go.

Found the Disney Princess bride! Look, I’m sure there are things you find tacky. They may not align with mine but we all signal our social and economic groups in many ways and those things do not generally appeal to folks in other groups. For the most part ad people are educated and working in a creative environment exposes them to certain visual styles and people with artistic backgrounds and even cool modern art in the lobby, etc. So their taste tends to mature in that direction. But don’t call us empathetic. No. We are not that. At all.

I feel like I could’ve written this post myself...did I sleep type? I’d also add adults with stuffed animals and fake plants.
