I just accepted an offer as a Web Developer for a great company. After 20 years in the restaurant I went to a coding bootcamp in March and am so happy to find a job one month after graduating.

I'm now very nervous about passing my background check. I have two DUI's, one in 2005 and one in 2015. I have never had a background check during my time in the restaurant industry.

Should I be worried? Should I let the hiring manager know beforehand so there are no surprises? Please help!

A candidate once alerted me that a minor infraction might appear on his bg check (driving without a license). I appreciated the honesty but it did add to my evidence that he was a bit loosy-goosy with rules and such. That info was also never passed to me from the bg check, so he kinda hurt his image unnecessarily. DUIs are probably more serious though and might appear.

Have you looked into getting the DUIs expunged from your record? I know some friends who have done that. Not only can it affect job prospects, but also travel such as entering Canada.

Congratulations!!! 👍👍👍 well done and inspiring.

Congrats 👏🏼

Congrats! Try to be as sure as poss if the DUI will flag up (guessing you’re in US) - if so, I’d mention and have a human conversation. People make mistakes, life throws up all sorts of curveballs…. People also make choices to change and your achievement getting this new job is testament to that! Hope it all goes well!

A quick Google search seems to indicate alcoholism counts as a disability in some states. Not sure if anything would need to happen so HR understands 'rejecting this person because of DUIs might be illegal.'

A doctor's note maybe? Chat with a lawyer?

I started my job just over a month ago and the one day a week I work from home I absolutely love. I have an hour commute to the office all other days and I'd love to even just get one more day at home. My manager is not aware of my adhd and I have crippling fear and shame around it so I'd rather not tell him. The office environment I'm in is honestly any neuroduvergent's nightmare. I know it's probably wrong to not tell him but I don't want any judgement.

Having confidence to take the next step in your career is all about the process.

Thoughts —> Beliefs —> Actions —> Outcomes —> Repeat

This virtuous cycle is a continuous feedback loop that builds on itself.

Focus on positive thoughts and let the negative ones float on by.

When thoughts become beliefs, take action.

Outcomes give you data to help adjust your approach and build confidence.

Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

You can DIY.
