I just accepted my dream job. Now, after giving notice to my current employer, I’m feeling guilty for leaving (I refused generous offers to stay). Any advice on how to get over this feeling?

Congrats on the new job. And I hate to say it, but five minutes after you leave, your former employer will forget about you and move on to the next attorney. It’s business at the end of the day. Just do your best through your last day, be gracious, burn no bridges, and move on with gratitude.

I agree. I left a firm, and came back (by invitation) later. My first day back I asked one of the senior partners (who was also my primary mentor) why they didn’t try to keep me when I left, and he said that they met and decided they could live without me!

I think there’s always that small pang of guilt and anxiety leaving a current employer. I’ve had it even at jobs I hated haha. Once you start your new job and get in the swing of things, it will pass! Best of luck in the new role!

Wait till your first new and improved paycheck hits the bank. Then come back to this feed and tell me if you feel guilty

Don’t feel guilty. They most definitely also benefited from your work. Don’t ever feel guilty for realizing your dream.

This is normal. I have left jobs and always felt sad and guilty and regretful at first. It’s kind of a good thing, means you’re not leaving out of hate/running away from your problems.

Give it a few weeks/months at your new gig and you’ll probably stop having those feelings. It’s your dream job for a reason. Nothing lasts forever but you gained a lot from your current job and you’ll take that with you. Try and maintain your relationships at the current job too by staying in touch with your mentors and friends here.

Exactly!

I have anxiety and feel guilt over the thought of leaving for my dream job! And mostly it’s because the people are just really great where I am now, and I will feel bad about leaving them. But, my dream job pays waaaay more. And will have better exit opportunities if I decide to go in house later.

GUILTY?! I wish lol I can’t wait until the day I can say goodbye to my current employer

Congratulations on landing your dream job!

You can feel nostalgic. Guilt means you did something wrong. You did not. Go forth and enjoy your dream job. This is work - not family. You don’t owe them more than doing a good job and giving reasonable notice, even if they’re awesome. Also, NEVER announce you are leaving a job and then let them bribe you to stay with more money. That doesn’t end well. (Law is my second career and I’ve seen this go badly.) You’ve made a good choice to pursue your dream job and not let them convince you to stay. Enjoy!!!

Just hang in there until you start your new job. Once you do, it will only be a few weeks before the new job feels normal and the old job feels like the past.

Came across a job opportunity at a real estate lit firm, landlord tenant issues primarily. I am very happy with my current ID firm aside from pay, but I’m up for my first raise in March. I get interesting cases and most of the partners I work with are great. This new position would be a $25k salary increase (maybe more) and I have heard work life balance there is great. My current billables are 2000 which I don’t love. Any thoughts?

This might be a dumb question, but I’m relatively new to marketing and trying to learn about different types of agencies. Are media agencies involved in the creative process at all or it’s literally just media planning and buying? I’m looking at different company websites like omd, mindshare, etc. and it looks to me like they are doing projects that creative agencies typically do. Is there a big difference these days between a creative agency and a media agency or there is a lot of overlap?

Given I also have anxiety disorder, I’m at risk of SAD. No more sun in the morning before I leave for work. Shorter days. Colder weather. I hate it:(

My wife got a job that requires us to relocate to San Diego. We have never lived there and know little about the city. We are planning to rent. We stayed in a hotel in little Italy and really loved the vibe there, but it’s too expensive for us. Are there other neighborhoods with similar vibes - restaurants, bars, lively, good for walking, clean, safe, young, diverse and accessible that are more affordable? Please share recommendations. How much should we reasonably budget to rent a 2bd/2bath?

Pro tip: if you ate shit all day when you were supposed to be making edits, change the time zone on your computer and make some edits. It will time stamp them with the time on the computer clock and you can make it look like you were working on it all day.

Currently work in transactional RE + corp For about 1 year. Prior I did generalist work as an in-house counsel for 3 years in luxury goods market. I’m good at what I do, I make good money $200+ but I’m just don’t like the subject matter (or what I do?). I feel like at this point I need to stick to something instead of jumping around to different fields. Not sure I want to stay in law for the long term but also unsure about my exit options. First year, small firm (only associate). I’m having a hard time, work seems to be a downward spiral (writing is bad, research takes too long, and partner assigns less work). My partner says he shouldn’t have to rewrite my stuff; I should be a better writer than him; I should make his life easier, but I’m not; I shouldn’t have to be told what to do-I should recommend the next course of action “do you want to just be a para”; etc. The partner is clearly frustrated and I’m overwhelmed. Help?
