I’ve negotiated beyond my asking salary before. They asked me my required amount and I said 100,000 and up and they came back with 105. After that, I asked for 115 based on the benefits package and they came back with 107
The recruiter stated a range of 67,000-125,000 which is an insane range
You’ve received good advice so far! I’m glad you asked this question because it’s common to toss out a number in the moment then fully regret it later. I believe it’s offer/interview anxiety (at least in my case). I wish I could go back in time when 22-year-old me told a future employee “Well, I’m making X per hour right now so anything above that is great.” — they offered me $X.50 and I took it, because I didn’t know any better. 😔
I would respectfully inquire if there is any flexibility on the base salary offer to the recruiter, if they ask about how you specifically said a number you can say that you were throwing a lower range number out there as a base conversation starter but would ideally like to be in a higher range and as long as you have reasons to back up why you deserve more the worst they can say is there’s no flexibility. Then you could try negotiating benefits (ie a signing bonus or other negotiable benefits) to try and bridge the gap between the lower salary and your ideal salary. Or worst case scenario you try to negotiate during raise time if you decide to still take the position and they give raises/bonuses.
Exactly lol I live in Colorado so companies legally have to be transparent so I do have that in my favor 😂 thanks for the advice!
