I just finished my 1st year of teaching, and Im curious how long I should wait till I pursue my masters? Any school recommendations?Any advice on how to juggle teaching, coaching, and being a student?

Assuming you’re young and single, get it all done now while you don’t have kids! Plus the earlier you move up the payscale, the better for the future

I’m sure it’s difficult while you’re coaching, but I definitely recommend working on your Master’s ASAP. As far as school choice, find one that’s convenient for you. You don’t want to add too much travel to an already packed schedule.

I completed my masters 5-6 years after starting teaching(right before kids). If I would have waited until after kids it would have been difficult to do. I was also a coach of two sports. I did mine through St. Xavier University. It was a cohort where they sent an instructor to our school once a week. It was a 16 month program I believe. It was sooo doable, even with coaching. I’m not sure where you are located but, you should look into that if possible. We learned a lot and it wasn’t too demanding.

I waited 3 years to start my masters. For me I think it was the perfect timing. I am getting my masters in Curriculum and Instruction which I think has just been so beneficial for me to continue to better my education and I am able to implement what I’m doing in class into my classroom! I coach and sponsor a club so I think it’s totally doable!

I am finishing mine now and I wish I had been able to do it before kids.... as I have a 3 year old and I have to manage time. I’ve been doing entirely online which has been nice. I could work at my pace and at the times that worked for me while still meeting deadlines for the class. It took me 2 years but has been work this. I did it through Augustana University (it has a relationship with Learners Edge) and was valuable in many ways

Wait until you get tenured, then go for it. Colorado State Pueblo just started a new C&I masters program. $8500, all done online, as fast as 1 year. Wish it would have existed when I got mine.

Basically, don't rack up a huge debt, find an affordable option. Teachers typically don't get paid well, so maximize your earning. Then keep moving over on the pay scale!

I waited to do my masters (got married, had kids, and couldn’t decide on an area). I tried to keep coaching, but it was just too much with family, teaching, and school. I would definitely suggest doing it sooner rather than later if you want to keep coaching. Also, be very cognizant of what area you choose - don’t paint yourself into a corner. I got my masters in educational leadership with my principal’s endorsement. The problem is that with a family, and a husband who has a better paying job, I can’t just relocate. I am now stuck teaching in a district I dislike but can’t find an admin job in the area. On the flip side no one wants to hire an English teacher with 20 yrs experience and an admin degree. On a brighter note - I went through Aurora University for my masters. There was a cohort in my area so I didn’t have to travel. They were amazing! They have an entire department devoted just to off-campus cohorts - the office people even knew us by name! They were great

Actually yes I did! I found that my teaching got better and I am better able to see things from different perspectives. It has made it a little more difficult to deal with poor administrators - but overall very happy with the education I got. Just wish I could get a job!

I'd start as soon as you can, time & money-wise, especially if your district offers reimbursement and/or salary increases for additional education. I started at the end of my 2nd year.

Definitely get it done before kids, however....I wouldn’t get it finished until after you receive tenure

I would recommend waiting until your are tenured and have more teaching experience. If for any reason your contract is not renewed and you have a masters, it might be harder to find a job. All things equal, the ‘cheaper’ teacher may get the position over a teacher with years and higher education due to budget reasons. Also, you will have more time to decide which graduate degree you want to pursue, and you will have more classroom experience to apply to your courses. Most new teachers I know wait for these reasons.

I would say if you are ready, start your degree. I started my first masters after my 2nd year of teaching. Completed an online masters in teaching and learning through Concordia University-Chicago. I am starting my 7th year teaching, and am working on my 2nd Masters in Ed Leadership through ACE.edu. I started last September and will be done the end of March 2020.

Any insights on ACE you can share? I was interested in it but when I inquired I got so many emails and phone calls/texts from them for me to enroll and it made me question their validity.

Congrats! I hope your first year went well!! I will be starting my 27th year in August. I started on my first master’s degree my fourth year. I was lucky enough to be in a district that paid for the entire program so that was key. However, when I went to another district after being home with my kids, I had 10 years with master’s and 30 hours. They didn’t give me my 30 hours. We are the only profession that we are penalized like that so while the education will always serve you well, know that is a possibly moving forward.

I did do another 45 hours so I am now at longevity on my current contract. We used to have a Ph.D lane but that was removed a number of years ago.

I wish you luck and I hope you love your job as much as I do!!

I just changed my role to project management...I start to hate this when I'm doing the detailed plans. I have never been a detailed oriented person and it takes too much of my mental energy when working on very details. I guess I'm happy about the change I made but still need to find something I want to do in long run.

J&J or Google? I’m in final stages and expecting an offer on both ends. TC seems about the same but J&J is based in Skillman, NJ whereas Google is in Austin, TX. Non tech roles in the same domain - Main difference is that J&J seems to be a higher level role (senior manager) whereas Google is a more junior one (lead). Any advice?

Best handbag / shoulder bag for work that is both professional and also convenient (e.g. can take work laptop, documents, food containers, water bottle)?

I have a direct report who is smart, passionate about her job and can be really innovative. However she carries this enormous weight of responsibility, for needing to do everything, do it right, make sure it's perfect, not trusting colleagues to help. It creates dread and panic and overwhelming workload and a terrible attitude for her and I am speaking with her this week to start to shift her mindset. Any tips in navigating how to let go of this heavy idea of "responsibility"?
