I just found out I'm pregnant!!! So excited 🎊🎊called the doctors office and they said I'm too early on and can see the doctor only after two months. Is this how it works? Also I was told to start taking otc prenatals, any recommendations?

Congratulations! Yes, on the 8-9 weeks you should have your first appointment but not later than 10. Not sure why but my doctor does not take new patients with pregnancy more than 11 weeks. I did not know I was pregnant till 10w somehow and they barely agreed to take me. Prenatal vitamins - make sure those include folate.

Congratulations!!! I’m 38w along with my first, and it’s so exciting early on!! A few things that were helpful: • Expecting Better by Emily Oster • Preggie pop drops plus (check Amazon; you will be glad you have them if nausea strikes!) • Giant water bottle • Ovia Pregnancy app (fun for tracking!) More than anything else, be PATIENT with yourself if/when your energy starts to fade hard. I felt so guilty about just laying around but I needed to cut myself some slack for a few weeks. It won’t last forever, but for me, weeks 8-14 were really hard. (Sick multiple times per day…) By about week 16-17, I felt like I had my energy back. Hopefully you will stay feeling good but just don’t be hard on yourself if you’re not. It’s a huge adjustment and IT WILL GET BETTER!!

Also I was really surprised by how intermittent our ultrasounds were. I had them at 8wks, 13wks and 20wks, and I haven’t had one since. The first is where you see the heartbeat, second is where they make sure things are developing ok and at 20w, they do an anatomy scan (v detailed ultrasound, checks on the major organs, counts fingers and toes). You can get the 3D ones or additional out of pocket at non -medical centers if you want to, but we decided we were OK without.

Congratulations! There is not much a doctor can do before that first visit anyway. I would recommend you pick up a copy of expecting better by Emily Oster to get an evidence-based perspective on pregnancy if you have not done so already.

Meh. I read half of it and much prefer the What to Expect series. Sure, if you are a nervous mommy who goggles every food she eats before taking a bite then this book might help. But if you just want the facts (concerns, expectations month to month, etc) and can be chill and level headed about things on your own, then don't bother. Just my opinion.

Yes this is how it works, congratulations! Any prenatal will do just fine, my doc literally said “buy the cheapest one” which I get like a pill version form Target house brand.

like

Yes, they all are basically the same BUT some contain iron which can make morning sickness worse. Try a pill with it, but if you get bad morning sickness know this could be part of it. I suffered through with #1, but with #2 I just ate things with more iron. You can also take iron pills separately.

One caveat - it’s okay to try more than one prenatal vitamin. I know some women get really nauseous and prenatals can bother the tummy. Whichever one you can keep down, is the one to go with lol.

like

Yes that’s how it works. I was also disappointed that I couldn’t see my doctor straight away when I first found out. I guess it’s different in the movies 😂😂

like

Congratulations! You can’t detect the heartbeat until 7-8 weeks which is why they don’t have you come in before then. Detecting the heartbeat is the first step to confirming you have a viable pregnancy. Before that they would just tell you that you are pregnant which is the same thing a pregnancy test tells you.

I agreed, but I also think it’s different for different people. I found through a pregnancy test the day after I missed period. I requested to see my doctor the following week because I had travel plans and was very anxious (first pregnancy) and they agreed to see me. My doctor was supportive even though she warned me I might not see anything yet. Sure enough, At week 5 (first Appt), I saw the sac and heartbeat in an ultrasound! Plus blood testing confirmed some major deficiencies I had which I quickly was able to start managing through proper supplementation. I am at week 10 and have already been to 3 visits and just completed my NIPT.

I loved ritual prenatal vitamins. It is expensive but it smelled like lemon and didn't cause nausea

like

ritual...loved it...has omega and methylfolate...which is better than folic acid

Thanks everyone, didn't know if it's normal. We just started trying so feeling very unprepared and overwhelmed but we're really happy and excited. I don't have any symptoms other than no periods and the pregnancy test. Thanks for all the books recommendations too 😀

I get the Naturemade prenatal pills, it’s one of the only ones in the market with omega-3. Congrats!

like

Congratulations! Waiting for that first appointment is hard for sure. I was able to ask for an HCG blood test done by my PCP around week 4-5 to confirm pregnancy and appropriate levels, if that's something that you'd like to do before the 8-10 week ultrasound.

like

I like the Rainbow Light prenatals - consider also getting fiber gummies!

like

I love the rainbow light with probiotic especially! Always sold out in my grocery store so I buy online.

Yep. It’s a long couple of weeks before you get to see the dr! If you start getting nauseous before you can see the dr, you can always do the otc mix of unisom tablets and b6 vitamins to help.

Yes! 8/9 weeks is the earliest they’ll generally see you unless you have concerns (I.e. cramping or bleeding). Congrats!!!!!!!!! Get on those prenatal ASAP

Congratulations mama! What an exciting time :) I still remember my first ultrasound and I saw my baby’s heartbeat for the first time

I used NatureMade Prenatal and bought it from Costco, pretty cheap there. Yes the doc won’t see you before 8-10 weeks (at the time they can check the heartbeat) but if you want you can ask a nurse practitioner at their practice to validate around 6 weeks, they basically test the urine and blood-work for confirmation

Congrats!! Yes, that’s standard. I’m of advanced maternal age with a prior miscarriage so I came in for two HCG and progesterone (beta) tests and I requested a third. My doc is seeing me at 7 weeks to confirm that things are progressing as they should - it’s around the time I miscarried last time.

I know that I changed doctors because one didn’t have first appt til 12-14? (And it was a “fancy” hospital….I found it very impersonal). But no appt for 8 weeks makes sense. Congrats!

I went at 8 weeks and 9 weeks for both my kids. That’s the point they can actually do an ultrasound. I remember wanting to go immediately too - it’s exciting !! But they wouldn’t even be able to do do the ultrasound or hear heartbeat so it would just be a confirmation which a pregnancy test already gave you.
