Congrats!
That’s awesome! You are definitely needed. My advice would be to practice self care and don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself. Not a PD but I’ve worked in that environment and it can be intense especially because other attorneys and higher ups may take out their frustrations on you. Be sure to carve out time to get your head out of the game!
Prior PD here- congratulations on your new role! PD offices are a great place to learn and develop your skills and, in my experience, work with some really great attorneys. Each office has its own culture as does any firm, so take the time to figure out what your style is and make it work for you. Your clients will streotype you and lie to you, so notate your files well. You will feel overwhelmed with their problems and may even experience what is called compassion fatigue, but that is okay. In those moments take a minute to recognize it is happening and readjust. I think developing good working relationships with opposing counsel and judges are apart of the role, so my approach was to always try to find common ground where possible. It is truly an honor to get to represent people as a PD, but it is not an easy job and you do not always get a lot of wins. Just remember that you are making a difference. All the best to you!
