Two question you should know the answer to before we get into the package issue :
- Will you be able to resign from your current company , even if counter-offered, if this is the best offer they make?
- Would you be prepared to walk away from the opportunity of joining a Fortune 500 if this is where you see your next move?
I ask because you mention a great WLB in your current job and I have no idea how this opportunity “found you”. If the reasons for moving are clear, the new job offer is compelling and there is nothing your current employer can do or counteroffer you with to change your mind then let’s move to the issue of the offer.
The first thing to say is that it isn’t foolish to negotiate - Quite the opposite .I would be surprised if the company doesn’t expect you to come back bearing in mind they are asking you to take a reduced salary with the 5k cut on your base.
Who was it that gave you the salary range of 140-185? The company or a recruiter? If it was the recruiter, then they should have been working with their client before the 1st interview to manage their expectations around what they would need to pay you should they want to interview and ultimately offer you . It would have prevented you finding yourself in the position you are now in. Equally they should still be working on your behalf to achieve your desired result.
If it was the company that made the comment then you need to have the salary conversation directly. I would recommend that go back to the company and thank them for their offer, confirm your excitement and motivations for wanting to join but explain that the package they have offered doesn’t hit the mark. Explain how you entered and progressed the interview in the knowledge that the top end of the salary range they gave you meant a +ve end result could be achieved for both parties . You should then give them a clear idea of what the offer needs to look like for you to accept and I would recommend that the number you give is a little higher than what you will settle for as there is a chance the company will comeback to you with a lower offer.
Having said all of the above, there are times when you sometimes have to take a step backwards in order to move several steps forward. It about you, your family and the things that are important to you . Look 12-24mths to the future. Other than money, how will you have developed as a person if you do take on a new challenge compared to being another year more experienced in your current job
Good luck !
Great advice!! :) well said.
Don’t undervalue WLB. If/whenyou don’t have it you’ll miss it.
Always negotiate. That is my number one rule. The worst they can say is no .
