I just got word that a job offer is being made on Monday. Early in the process HR told me the company’s target was $120k. Now, HR is asking me what number I would be comfortable accepting. What should I say?

$150k.

The target is not the top. You won’t get $150k. They’ll counter and you’ll end up with at least $125k.

like

Consider the total comp package. If you ask for higher comp and they won’t go higher, you could try to negotiate other aspects of the package (bonus, PTO, RSUs, etc).

In-house, Fortune 100 company, Legal/Contracts, Chicago

120k seems about right for a MCOL city but I’d think higher for Chicago. It’s been awhile since I’ve checked the salary guides but I’d look at them give your number and then explain it’s based on market salaries

What industry? This would be very low in big tech, but right on the nose for other industries. I hear pharma pays close to tech so it’d also be low for them.

Ask them how total compensation is determined. You want to ask about bonuses, raises, opportunities for promotion, equity.

Never throw out the first number, esp. not before you understand their total compensation philosophy.

I am about to hand in my notice at a job I am pretty secure in, to go to a job for a relatively new company (with a significant salary increase). Any tips for:

1. Getting over the nerves that are as a result of taking a risk (I am late 30's)
2. The guilt of leaving a role where I have an amazing working relationship with all my colleagues and my boss

Any tips would be appreciated as I am a mess of nerves!!

Plaintiffs counsel took my clients deposition today. He mentioned that he would likely be ordering the transcripts and I suggested we split the cost of them (in front of court reporter). He got pretty defensive and said absolutely not, it’s unfair to the court reporter, and that it is frowned upon in the industry to do that. Each party orders (and pays for) their own copy. I’m in my 2nd year of practice, never heard such a thing. I’ve actually split the cost before! Curious for insight on this…

Any help or guidance would be appreciated. I really want to make a change. Thank you!

Whoever said employers don’t care about grades and transcripts after your first job was a liar. Every lateral position that I’ve applied to as a 3rd year has requested transcripts. Why do we lie and tell grads that employers don’t check transcripts when they do. My coworker, a 5th yr, had to submit his transcripts also to lateral job. Side note - it speaks volume when multiple associates are trying to lateral at the same time

The amount of people, even attorneys, who can't separate out the policy merits of abortion from the issue of whether it is a constitutional right is disappointing. I consider myself pro-choice ---I believe states should allow it, that the federal government can pass a statute to guarantee it, and that FDA statutes and regulations will preempt any state trying to ban chemical abortions through FDA approved drugs. Dobbs at its core is a case about the Due Process Clause, not the policy of abortion
