I just had a huge trial get continued and now I am searching for hours to fill the void it left so I can hit my billable requirement. Any tips on asking for more work this time of year?

When I have a big time suck get punted, I just contact partners I’m working for (or have worked for) and tell them I have capacity to take on new projects. It’s helpful to offer suggestions like “I know we don’t have x coming up for another month or so, but is there anything I can go ahead and knock out in preparation while I have extra time to devote to the file?,” “are there any issues in this case you want me to explore while I have extra time,” or “I had a trial get rescheduled, is there anything on your to-do list I could tackle?” Any inquiry like this usually gets me more bites than “I’m slow feed me work”

I agree with Associate 1. Contact your partners and tell them you have unanticipated bandwidth due to a continuance. You likely will not have the option of continued preparation on the trial, but if by chance your insurer will allow it, continuing getting your case prepared and “in the box”. It may also be a good time to get caught up on CLE before the end of year Cru has.

One shining light - we had a Director who stepped up and spoke his mind with candor and authenticity - the real leaders in GTM are DIRs!

I am collecting my own thoughts and formalizing how to give my constructive feedback.

Would love to hear from others from GTM who attended this in-person that could have literally been an email 💌

I’m a current biglaw associate thinking of lateraling to Quinn Emanuel. Looking for a more dynamic and trial-focused litigation practice, but I’m a little put off by how poorly Quinn seems to invest in support (tech, paralegals, etc) and generally seems to nickel and dime its associates. Curious how these issues feel for Quinn associates on a day to day basis.

How do you approach collecting documents from a client in response to discovery requests? Particularly with broad and vague document requests that leave you guessing about what the other side is looking for, even after you meet and confer. I’m realizing no one ever taught me a systematic approach to this problem. And that big, name-brand companies are absolutely terrible about record-keeping or even knowing what records they have.

Filed a complaint in early May, they filed a motion to dismiss timely, and I responded in a timely fashion as well. During my research on the motion to dismiss I realize that I had cited a section of the statute that I now feel applies less than a different section.

What is my duty to the court? I do feel that both sections of the statute can likely apply, and admittedly the section that applies better I feel has a lower burden of proof.

Any billing tips? I struggle and always end up dedicating the last days of the month to getting caught up. Advice from people who have tons of different matters would be helpful. If I got to block bill to 2-3 clients each day, I would be fine. But I have dozens of entries on any given day and I can’t block bill. I find it hard to carve out the big chunk of time it takes to log my hours.

Expect to be getting an offer for in-house at a start up soon. Currently at a mid-size firm. Have decent book of business and managing several pending litigation matters. How much notice should I plan on giving? Two weeks does not seem like enough, and I want to do right by the firm (and colleagues) I’m leaving as they’ve always been good to me.
