I just had drinks with two of my college friends who been at mbb for 3 years… Feedback was that they were lost on what to do next because they had good general skills + brand, but never went too deep on anything. Is that a real problem or do I need better friends?

So confused. Do you only value friends for their depth of expertise…

likefunnysmart

If you’re valuing them for their perceived career exit options perhaps they need a better friend

like

Someones else is about to post on FB: “Just had dinner with someone from Accenture and I pretended that I was lost and didn’t know what to do next in my career only so that it would ease their inferiorty complex. Poor soul. Anywayys i’m making 350k TC at age 24 am I behind 😩”

likefunny

Not sure what you want to hear and what you mean by needing better friends. You may not have meant it that way, but it could come across as an inferiority complex. Yes generalists often feel that they have not acquired technical expertise but they don't realize how valuable their general problem-solving skills (and amazing ability to structure and dissect ambiguity into smaller, solvable problems) are. This is far rarer to find (and therefore more valuable) than people who know a lot about 1 or 2 things.

like

Best is a combination of both though - if they stay in MBB they will anyway have to specialise sooner or later so that will come as well.

like

Surprised you have any friends at all with this mentality…

Dude, really bizarre POV.

If you learn anything from this bowl it's that insecurity and anxiety comes and goes in most of us. A feeling of not being good enough, mile wide and inch deep. So them sharing that is likely genuine - but they wouldn't be at an MBB if they weren't talented. So be a good friend ask them what they like and support them onto an SME track so that they can get the depth they feel they are missing.

I mean it’s probably true that they’ve bounced around industries. It doesn’t mean they couldn’t get a great job across those industries.

Do they view you as a friend? Or a mentee at Accenture

lol you’re a weirdo dude

Sounds like every consultant ever. Myself included, once upon a time.

I guess they should change you as a friend.

there’s a cost associated with specializing, just as there is a cost associated with generalizing. the cost is that you can easily find yourself pigeonholed and quickly reach a ceiling that can be very difficult to break, and your career can be punctuated by ebbs and flows and plateaus, as opposed to continual upward mobility. and after a while, it becomes very difficult to switch to anything else. the cost associated with generalizing is the opposite - jack of all trades, master of none. not having the required depth of experience for certain roles, never achieving mastery in a particular subject, knowing how to solve a problem but not knowing the possible solutions in advance, etc - basically being less effective and efficient.

Wow, all this internet hate for asking an honest question about career perspectives. I am not doing any comparison whatsoever since we are on different career tracks and am not trying to go to mbb. As for “better friends”, I was speaking to people always looking at the glass half empty instead half full, not any sort of ridiculous friend calibrating - I realize that didn’t fully come thru on a quick post. I am 3 years into consulting and always curious to ask about different perspectives. When did everyone because so eager to hate than share?

like

If that’s what you meant by better friends, then yeah the hate was unwarranted lol. But re-read your post — the original phrasing sounded very judgmental

In-depth industry/sector experience is highly over-rated.

Second. Problem solving/ adaptability is much more important in a constantly shifting industrial and tech landscape.

I feel like if they have FB they could easily know it’s you posting this lol

Yeah man, get a life.

It is probably true, you can become a great consultant but you are not specialized on a single topic

Yeah this is pretty common. Strategy buddies made fun of me for going to tech consulting then they all want to exit to FAANG product roles after 5 years of mbb or tier 2 firms and can’t use sql or python to save their lives! 😂 you can’t smooth talk your way to the nerds at FAANG without basic data skills.
