Firing seems harsh but definitely discipline. They should know better.
There has to be more to the story than what you’ve heard
“Here one day, gone the next” could describe most firings from the outside, and doesn’t make it fishy - you don’t usually keep people around after firing them, and anyone not involved in the situation (HR, manager, person impacted) will never know the whole story because of confidentiality. Unless the company is generally shady and doesn’t follow best practices, I’d be very skeptical of the story you’ve heard so far - there’s likely a lot missing from it. If this story does fit the way you see your company operating in general, I would consider looking elsewhere if you can because it doesn’t bode well.
I don’t understand why this person would be fired if they spent their own money to book the ticket.
Exactly
Most likely you don't have the full story and you'll never will. You think HR will disclose why they fired someone?
You are probably getting the "poor me" story.
Nah, you’ll only get the employee’s side of the story unless your HR dept has no integrity. I fired someone for performance who later interviewed with a friend of mine and told a “poor me” story that wasn’t even close to the truth.
I don’t know what being a single mom has to do with it. They either complied with the travel & expense policy, or they didn’t.
Wouldn’t anybody be stuck with the bill, even if they weren’t single or a mom?
There’s another reason. There always is.
Sounds like not the whole story tbh

We are allowed to book any class but only get compensated for business or economy + depending. If we want an upgrade we can, just pay the difference ourself.
Then I hope she argues with the decision or sues since I don’t know how they can fire her for something that isn’t against policy.
There’s more to it then this.
Expenses are not to be played with. It is usually a behavior pattern noticed that gets one fired. Patterns of overspending, false reporting, and breaking company policy. This is where the truth will be found.
Some companies want you only book through a certain system.
Some companies have a cap of flight costs. Also hotel, car rental, food, etc.
This list goes on, but the answer lies in either a very gross misuse or an ongoing pattern.

I’ve seen things go bad when someone uses their corporate card for personal expenses.
But in the case of a fare differential you would always book with your corporate card and pay the difference. You can’t easily split the initial payment.
Do they have documentation for booking first class?
No clue
Are you the director that approved? If so, did HR not consult first?
If it’s a different director I’m guessing something else was in play… this barely warrants a friendly email.
This reasoning seems suspicious. I agree with HRM 1 - seems like they’re trying to save face. People don’t like to admit they were underperforming.

How many thousands of dollars was this ticket?

There’s probably more to the story but I wonder if she had it in writing. C-Y-A.
That’s out of sorts. That is not only extremely unfair, that is unethical. If she spent her own money and tried to submit expense, inquiry is the best approach. Sounds like a confrontation and a bad result. Prayers for her.
Make note my friend. Actions..
Albeit harsh, she may have been let go based on principle. If she was travelling for a team building event with her peers, was it wise that she upgrade her ticket and segregate herself from the group for the trip? 🤔
