Connecting with people at your company is already a good start. Take it easy and build a network slowly, trying to connect with 500 people you don’t know by spamming the connect button is pointless.
LinkedIn networking can be done two ways. One is pointless spamming of "connect" and getting the numbers up and the other is having an organic network which you actually know and can rely on. Start with Option 2 at your current company. Slowly pivot to your old school and re-connect with people from your school who you may or may not know. Other companies and all depends on how much you want to network in general
Connecting with old professors!
Start networking
I'd start by finding some mutual connections (LinkedIn shows you how many other people you know are also connected to a particular individual). I'd go slow and work your way there, though. Otherwise, you'll just come across as spammy and insincere. Try to focus first on those who you have something in common with and introduce yourself, letting them know that commonality is why you'd like to connect.
Networking is a slow process, and you don't want to add just anyone, but connecting with previous professors and classmates is a great start, on top of connecting with your current coworkers! Try to focus on the people who are in the industry you want to work in or currently work in. Another opportunity you may want to consider are networking events, which almost every industry has, where you can exchange information and LinkedIn profiles.
Definitely connect with old professors, and classmates in your industry, even if you only knew them in passing.
I woudl just go through and network. Find people who work at companies that you are interested in. You can always message them and thank them for allowing you to follow them and just network. I have gotten so many good connections from Linked in.
To get more connections on LinkedIn, I suggest you first optimize your profile. Second, get endorsements. How? By endorsing others. Start with your friends, family, or even your former professors. Also, one of the best way to gather connections is by joining LinkedIn groups.
Join groups on LinkedIn in the fields you’re interested in. Also follow companies, and like/comment on others’s posts. Share a post or article if relevant for the professional audience you’re looking to connect with. Also do searches for recruiters in your field. They’ll connect with anyone.
