I just need to vent a little. I’m realizing that our profession is just a way for the client to take out their frustration. Their perception that everything should be smooth and perfect because they’re paying us is unrealistic and abusive. Trying to figure out why I allow this to go on without the perks of travel and expenses.

You’re not the only one with this sentiment. The travel and perks masked the bad parts of this job. No hiding from them now.

This, plus the fact that a lot of clients really don’t know what they are doing, is making it pretty intolerable. Actually being on site and able to interact with clients helped me see them as people, wfh is just making see them as *mostly* incompetent people lol

likeupliftingfunny

Agree with this so much. I even surprise myself with how little patience and tolerance I have for incompetent clients now that we're all wfh...

Only way for this job to work is to completely disconnect emotionally from it. I've been yelled at by plenty of clients, disrespected by partners, now that I'm responsible for selling had terrible months, etc. Yet I've never been fired or even put on a probationary plan, always been paid pretty well by my standards (and it goes up and up each year, in spite of the yelling and disrespect), and even when all of the BS is happening, put myself first and put my laptop away when it's time to make dinner. If you just see it as a way of getting money to support your life and don't expect any enjoyment/fulfillment out of the actual work itself (and in fact even learn to zone out when people are actively shitting all over you verbally), it isn't too bad. That's where I'm at now, can't guarantee I'll never get fed up and it won't be worth the money anymore but for now it is

A1, minor correction- M has killed his ego 😃
I am with you M! If a job is a means to earn, which it is for most for us, then let’s focus on that. Meanwhile we should still stay as nice, aware and responsible humans!

What I love even more is when the project is over and past clients still ask me questions or asks me to do more crap for them instead of utilizing their own employees 🤡

likefunny

Is that a bad thing? Heap the negative energy and anger on the temporary outsider, and then when they leave, the organization continues to function effectively without internal resentment and bad blood.

I was told day 1 this was a key value add of consultants.

Something something, KPMG

This is only at the big brands. In my view our brands are our greatest problem in unrealistic expectations from clients. In boutique firms with mid-market clients there is far more mutual respect and collaboration than I have seen in my time at the big firms. At a boutique a CR is simple and they thank you for doing more, at a big firm they want to bicker about PowerPoint slides from initial meetings that were never in the resultant contract and hold you hostage by your brand. It's a Michael Scott standoff. 🙄

People pay engineer's and expect that the bridge doesn't collapse. People pay surgeon's with the expectation their procedure will go smoothly. People pay accountants to ensure their books are correct and filed appropriately.

Is consulting the only profession where people pay us and we say this is what we think, results may vary? Of course clients have the right to expect that our opinion is correct, or at least buffer and support their own views. What else are they paying us for?

If not for this, what other value would we add?

The job is hard the job involves being a fall guy. I wouldn’t say you’re just a punchbag though. What’s happening is you’re being tasked with the shittiest of tasks that either they don’t want their own people to do, or their own people can’t fix. If you can solve those problems effectively, you’re a consultant.

Sometimes the client is shit, but if the challenge is brutal? I remember right away why I’m a consultant. I want to solve tough shit.
