I just realized people with MBAs don’t really know things…worked with an AC without a MBA vs a C with a MBA.

The former was acting as a mentor and the latter needed help aligning boxes. What is going on here 💀 pls fix

New MBAs were the bane of my work life when I was in consulting. Knew just enough to feign competence, but not enough to actually move the ball forward

like

Right…

I’m an MBA who started in consulting from undergrad. I 100% agree that MBAs are not as good at PPT and can be slow but that’s mostly analyst/consultant level core skill.

But when you look at performance at manager level +, that’s where I saw that MBAs did better than non-MBAs. Different ball game when you’re needing to have someone explain crisis situation to clients, networking, or making sales pitches. That’s when you see them actually perform.

likehelpfulsmart

I still do PPT! I didn’t say we don’t do that at the manager level anymore. I’m saying if you’re comparing typical tasks of an analyst/consultant, they’re for sure going to be more skilled at PPT since they have more of a leg up in that skill than a freshly minted MBA.

Sample size of 2?

Who in their right mind makes decisions on consulting projects based on MBA cases LMAO. I don't think any of my course mates who went to consulting are that dumb

like

I’m convinced people who are butt hurt here are MBA holders 😂

Edit* I’m currently applying for an MBA myself, I thought that they were like gods but after this reality check, im like wow

like

This is incredibly ignorant and prejudice on your part

Remember the C MBA might have had a lot of experience in something else, and perhaps REAL skills vs our normal consulting work.

likesmart

They got that pre MBA, not necessarily from their MBA. More often than not, what they get from their MBA is elitism, arrogance, and defensiveness when others treat their perspective with the slightest skepticism.

like

If “knowing” things is measured by the speed you move around in excel and ppt, you have a lot to learn!! I find this to be a common view of inflated consultants with no “real” experience DOing.

likesmart

Can't agree more, M1!

like

In industry now, so if I'm paying MBA consultant rates to have someone align boxes we have a problem

likefunny

The fact that you are making a general comment like this just shows that you don’t know anything either.

like

A -> AC -> C - sounds like ZS

like

Sounds like quite a lot of firms

I'll add one to your sample size.. I'm a C with an MBA and an experienced associate can probably navigate Excel and ppt 10x faster than I can.
That being said, I wasn't hired for my expertise in Microsoft office programs, I was hired because of my industry experience and the ability to ask the right questions in the context of the larger business and industry. It's all about what purpose a person serves on their team, we can't all be experts in the same thing.

likesmarthelpful

Tbh MBA doesn’t really mean much. For me planning on going back just for a break lol

likefunny

As someone who’s done an MBA, it’s summer camp for adults. With some learning sprinkled throughout

like

This post should probably just be removed.

likefunny

You’re right, but I don’t think your take is as smart as you think it is. A fresh MBA grad coming from industry isn’t going to come in knowing all the ppt nuances and other tricks that come with consulting experience, and an AC that’s been around for 2.5 years is likely stronger. But give the MBA 6mo-year and they’ll catch up, and their background/skills can shine more. There’s a reason every firm hires MBAs

likesmart

It’s just really stupid to think an MBA should have as good of job specific skills as someone in the same position with years of experience. MBAs aren’t hired to excel at that specific role.

like

Yes, because an entire summary of performance can be chalked up to cell alignment in PPT.

likefunny

“Project they know things” is the one-line description of being a consultant

like

MBA is about as much as a scam as the college industry.

likesmart

Exactly. All these comments read the exact same way as college grads desperately defending their $200k degrees, some relevant to the 21st century, many not.

like

The wool is coming off the eyes.

So your sample size is 2... trustworthy!

Can’t replace experience with any education.

If you want to handle situations with multiple senior c suite stakeholders, mba skills may help you to ride these situations with ease.

If you want to hire one of 2 people with same experience of 10 years - one with mba and one without, company will prefer mba assuming it is not a technical position like software engineer.

Is IB worth the sacrifice of WLB? Obvious pay is really good but are the prestige and pay worth it if you’re planning on only doing it for a couple years?

Currently working at an IRA with great WLB. Honestly I love my job, the firm, and people I work with.

Also doing MBA part time at a T15 school. Thinking about switching to IB but I’ve done my research and I think I would burn out of IB in two years but I might be ok with that for the opportunities after.

Recalling my first onboarding meeting in-house with the c - suite. Thinking back now recalling that they would often mention if someone they are referring to is a woman. For example, "Oh we have these two women doing x, y, and z and they do it well, a well-oiled machine." etc. I was the only woman in the room. They did not mention when someone performing a particular role was a man but they did point out when it's a woman, happened about four times. Odd, no? What would you make of this?

Hi! I just received a job offer that includes a sign on bonus to cover the cost of a certification that I’m getting (study program and exam fees). My offer letter states that the appropriate withholding and tax will apply. I’m not sure what that means - does anyone know if this amount should be tax free because of its purpose? It’s not a bonus or anything. I want to make sure I have a general idea before I ask HR about it.
