Update: The firm got back to me and offered me more. I asked for $20k more and they met me half way with $10k. My view was there was no harm in asking. For them to even offer me the position during Covid it means they have their ducks in a row.
Yay! Congrats!
Congrats! If it's a reasonable offer, I'd ask for a 10% bump in salary. It's not a huge amount so you don't look greedy, but still enough to matter if they say yes or counter at 5%. If they're not paying relocation costs, definitely ask for that (assuming a move). Now might be a good time to discuss a wfh allowance to buy a home office setup as well. PS, if they have a set bonus structure, make sure you understand the requirements.
I would definitely ask for some clarity on bar dues, CLE, etc. Most firms will cover those, and any biglaw firm will. Ideally you'll get an offer letter that spells out all the benefits and you can go from there.
Is this big law? Do they have a set salary or more fluid? 20% seems a bit high, but that’s context dependent.
If it’s biglaw they likely won’t negotiate salary unless you are negotiating your year level.
Is it public knowledge that this firm has COVID cuts? If so, I agree don’t try to negotiate salary.
What was their offer?
