“Full stack” is expressive, I believe “head of” is more to express hierarchy rather than skill
Most small companies are using that title to attract an experienced candidate who sees it as a step up. The problem is that senior title at a small company typically isn’t valued at larger, more established employers. For example, my replacement at a small startup I worked for a few years ago got titled “Head of Customer Success”, but when she moved on to an established company earlier this year she only entered at the manager level.
After working at a startup, I don’t value “Head of” at all.
Everyone is head of something. Associate level people calling themselves “Head of xyz” when really they’re like, 6 rungs down the Exec ladder and just carved out a niche name for themselves. It’s like “Sweet guy, you’re head of stapling papers together” or some nonsense.
Ahah for sure in this case it seems more like an ego flattering trip than something else.
But for very experienced people that have an entrepreneurial mindset and actually do a lot in the small organization it does make sense to me to use the title « head of »
Because indeed you are the head making things move forward, without waiting permission.
Did this person say why this title shouldn’t exist in smaller orgs?
I think head of is a better title than VP or Chief in a smaller org/startup. The latter implies more hierarchy, the former shows a leadership role.
This would be the perfect transition to another fun topic : how much content is the right content on LinkedIn ahah
My 21 yo roommate was a Head Of Business Development in a startup she joined with her classmates. i think she exited to M at IBM
Definitely seeing more and more people add “head of” to their title and my guess is most aren’t actually titled that officially. They’re technically the head as they are the lead of a particular workstream or sub function, but they have a VP or boss overseeing them still.
