Lean into the politics, rise above or leave. Unfortunately no easy solves here
Rise above all the politics and focus on the job you're there to do. If you can, try and improve the environment. Give it another 3-6 months and if you still hate it, look to move. By then you'll have been there for a year and it's a reasonable period of time.
Great advice 👍🏼 thank you, one if the best ones I have received.
Use the politics to your advantage. Make “allies” and throw them under-the-bus when needed. “Stick a knife” in everybody only in the back and at will. Stuck up the bodies on top of each other to craw on them to the top. Cheat, lie, backstab and use every situation to your advantage. Divide Et Impera! Giacomo Machiavelli (aka Jamie Diamond).
Move
Every place has politics; some more than others. It’s okay to move as long as you don’t say unpleasant things about the company. Do your work and keep looking for places that have good reputation
Great advice 👍🏼 thank you
You are going to find politics in every firm. Deal with it. If you are busy doing your job and producing high quality work, why do you have time to notice the gossipers and backstabbers?
Take care of yourself. I’ve learned companies truly don’t care about you—they’ll get over it.
I hated my first few firms. They were toxic. So, I moved. I worried about how it would look to have a 1-year blip on my resume. And I'm sure some employers took a pass for that reasin. But my mental health was worth the effort. I've been with my current office for a decade now. The culture is supportive and collaborative. The people are human beings. No one throws staplers; no one tries to fuck the associates or staff. It took me a while to find it though.
Whether you should leave or stay is something only you can decide. There's no "right andwer" - like all decisions it will close some opportunities and open others. But there are good places to work out there. If your concern is about politics, that is to some degree ubiquitous. But the level of toxicity isn't.
Good luck!
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this. I really appreciate your words, will take this on board. My supervisor has reach the end of her time at the firm and has mentally resigned. Sadly, I’m receiving the brunt of it by being dragged into the toxic back and forth, office politics.
If you're already feeling this, it won't get better and as someone who's been in a wild office politics environment for a few years, this is the culture that will be continued/won't improve even if a ton of the people leave. Save yourself and get out as soon as you can!
You’re in Legal- pull up a chair, and buckle in - it’s gonna be a bumpy ride no matter where you go- so long as you’re a paralegal 😬
Everyone I know in the legal space is incredibly miserable, worked beyond capacity….consuming large amounts of alcohol/ coke… and itching to do anything other than practice law.
You said “move again” … which made me assume this isn’t your first rodeo with office politics (from my understanding, it doesn’t change- the larger the firm, the more political it becomes…that’s law)
Move again as in.. I have just moved … do I really want to move again….
We should never assume in this field😊
I've been working for corporate America for 21 years. I've never found a company that didn't have office politics. If you find one, you let me know.
I appreciate that however, I’m a new starter at the firm and the first topic that landed on my desk was the ‘office politics’. I know of many people who work in other firms and I can certainly say they do not go through what I am seeing at this place 🙄
Just curious, which kind of politics are you experiencing?
Issues between a partner and other partners/support staff. I am sometimes dragged into the mess.
Leave.
It’s the same game everywhere you go, whether you like it or not.
