I just started a new job a month ago and already feeling burned out. I left my last job because I was working crazy hours and was assured during the interview that this would be a 50 hour workweek. I am currently working 80. I’m trying not to panic and chalk it up to the learning curve. However observing others who have been with the company longer, I’m seeing that they are all working longer than 50 hours. Am I wrong to want to address this with management? I feel duped!

I hate that! I always bring that up during an interview like you did as well….I really just want a wfh 9-5 when I leave. I would start looking again….I can understand a busy cycle a few months out of the year and if I’m home I don’t mind staying logged in till 6 or 630 here and there but for me 80hrs is unacceptable and just because we make fairly decent $$$ >100k (that took me till my now late 30s to make in my case since I stayed at my last company, finally left after getting my masters)…doesn’t mean we need to be abused and not have a nice work life balance!!! Wish u all the luck!!!

I would certainly address it and maybe enforce your own boundaries as well. You were told 50. Work 50. If they bring up an issue with performance because of that you can address how there seems to be a disparity between what is expected and what you were told. The truth is, when managers start judging people based on what they do as “overtime” they are bringing personal lives into the balance. You’re allowed to have one and not be penalized for it.

like

I'd definitely mention it to your manager. Unfortunately, if everyone around you is also working 80 hours a week, it's unlikely they'll accommodate your request, which means you'll probably need to move on. Worth the conversation in the meantime, though.

Can you just…set boundaries with whoever is giving you projects and work less? I would talk to your boss and say exactly that you said here - hey, this is why I left my last firm, this is what I was assured when accepting this job, and also I want to be really transparent about your expectations and mine as well. Of course assure him or her that you’re a committed team player and don’t mind temporary all hands on deck situations, but in general you plan to start logging on and off at these times and not check your work email on these days. Ask for agreement or specific solutions if that’s not acceptable to them. Then stick to your boundaries either way. You just may need to start looking for another job if you don’t get the sense and assurance you’re supported.

like

In addition to the comments about trying to set some boundaries, ask your manager if you can catch up and talk about your adjusting to the new job. Explain everything you currently have on your plate and give them a reasonable estimate of how long each of those tasks or projects will take. Ask them for help prioritizing and get an idea for what they think is a reasonable amount to be working on or on the timing for these things. It could be that they aren’t aware of everything you have going on or that due to the nature of you still adjusting to the role, you’ve either been assigned too many things at the moment or they had an unrealistic view of what a new hire could handle right away. If that’s not the case and this is expected and something that isn’t going to change then it’s reasonable to look into other opportunities where there is a better work life balance.

Sitting back thinking how ironic it is that I’m literally deep into the interview process with another agency to get away from an account director who makes my life hell. I have to give up working at an awesome agency but I don’t see a way of getting away from them because they wouldn’t switch me to another account. Oh well maybe I’ll boomerang.

abroad shitpot masters doesn't bring talent and creativity.. Recruiters shud stop obsessing over foreign degrees unless it is super good university.
They also need to familiarise with good colleges names.

With the world we are living in now and record high inflation, how much of an increase would you ask for if you were up for a promotion? This would include going from a level 1 to a Sr. In company there are level 3s (which is entry level) up to level 1s, then senior level. The responsibilities would consist more so of being the go to person for help and guidance opposed to going to the manager of that team in the department. The pay grade starts out to be about $5k more than a level 1 initially.
