In summer 2008, I passed on an agency I thought was beneath me. I had to beg for freelance work for the next 13 months until that same agency hit me up out of the blue again. I was thrilled to interview and accept. Plus, I ended up doing decent work and learning a ton there. There’s someone you can learn from at every agency. Sometimes you have to take a step back to take the next two steps forward. Success isn’t linear.
Love this story and can relate. Took an internship that was my “back-up” that ended up putting me on a really cool account. I have them to thank for my first portfolio pieces. Ya really never know.
Mentor
I've done that, more than once. This business is a game of musical chairs, and once you're out, it's a long wait to get back in, so get back in however you need to, and work your way back up again, and be thankful you have the work, too.
Do the work. Write amazing stuff. Make them think they got a bargain. And if they don't see it, you've got a book full of new work to catapult from.
I think it’s ok to feel like that and be grateful for having a job at the same time.
I would be grateful cause there are many others who wish they could get a job to pay their bills
It's ok to feel that way now, but not once you start work.
If you carry that energy into the job, you're gonna do a crap job. Everything will suck, and you'll likely miss chances for good opportunities cuz you're too busy feeling bad about yourself.
I genuinely believe you can do good work anywhere. I've won awards and gotten press for work at agencies where most staff wouldn't know a good idea if it hit them in the face.
So, if you're as good as you think you are, try and do the best work possible. Even if you just end up holding onto it to use as a side project or at another agency later.
Times we’re living in my man. Take it, then fuckin crush it
Agree with the thought of going in there and be awesome, do you best work, work hard, make yourself indispensable and then you’ll have the chips to negotiate later. I took a lower paid job once , worked hard and got two huge raises over the years.
Def okay to feel that way. Particularly because pay cuts are happening across the board. I’ve had friends who’ve received a title cut but usually for a good agency. Understandably for you, these are exceptional times. Does the agency feel stable though financially?
Yeah they got a PPL loan so they seem to be stable for the next few months at least which is nice
