The Japanese massacred our entire village. Those who lived to tell the story hid in caves while the troops ravaged the land. My grandfather had a younger baby sibling at that time, and in order to not be found (due to the baby’s cries) the village agreed to suffocate the baby as to not give away the location of the hidden. Men who weren’t lucky were killed, women who were found by Japanese troops were raped and then killed.
Up the delta, in Guangzhou, the Japanese established a human testing facility (Unit 8604) where they would purposefully infect prisoners with plague diseases. Every time we walked past ZhongShan University, there would be stories about how cruel and dark the history was.
The fact is, the Japanese were just as cruel as the Germans. But til this day, while the Germans have repented and apologized, the Japanese havent, so it leaves a bad taste in our mouths

Lol I thought the same - japan gave a half apology in the early 2000s but their overall tone was un-apologetic.

The funny thing is that asked the US for another apology for Hiroshima and asked us not to do something like that again. How about you not bomb us randomly lol and apologize for your own crimes first

My friend who is Japanese also said primary schools will just skip over that part of history so the younger generations have no idea the truth of WWII

This is a super intricate discussion and I'm hoping for and looking forward to honest discussions on this. I'm sure we have people representing each group here. Please share your raw, uncut takes, and others try not to attack them saying what they really feel, as opposed to it as you may be.

My Chinese mom feels really strongly about it. She says the flag of imperial Japan makes her physically ill. Idk why Japan is so intent on not apologizing, but from what I've read it's because they a large population of very conservative people who don't want to give an inch.

My mom said if I were a girl and wanted to marry a Japanese man, she would absolutely be against it.

When people stop seeing “others” as humans it’s easy to justify the horrendous acts. We see it every time there is a war and we see it even during the smallest conflicts.

It'd be interesting to see if Japan-Korea relationships improve if Ishiba Shigeru succeeds Abe - he's shown an apologetic stance towards comfort women in the past.

It’s funny how every time China and Korea have internal troubles (economic downturn, popular dissatisfaction, etc) they bring up the memory of the WWII two blame everything on Japan. No doubt what Japan did was horrendous but there were (half hearted) apologies by numerous PMs and trillions of aid money/ reparation paid into both countries ever since the war. Do you see Israel demanding “sincere” apologies to Germany every time they are polling badly? Some of us bitch about BLM victim mentality but Yh it’s okay if it’s against Japan.

Also, Japan(government at least) isn’t asking the US for apologies or handouts for Hiroshima etc. Most of the agitations are from civilian bodies, which the Japanese government usually try to silence because they don’t want the diplomatic fallout. That makes it very different to the state sponsored anti-Japanese campaigns in China&Korea. The other day there was a ruling in which a local court stated after 75 years that the number of people recognised as victims of a-bomb should be expanded (to include people who were outside the few km radius of the ground zero, but still got secondary radiation etc) Government has been dismissing the claimants ever since the war and they are appealing against the decision again.

It’s deeply rooted in the Japanese culture.

Japan suffers from a historical amnesia, except that, it's not an amnesia, but a government-driven and institutionalized policy of information suppression, and disinformation intended to make sure new generations remain completely ignorant of what actually happened during World War II, and instead embrace a twisted version of the events.

It's really remarkable if you think about it. When people think about "brainwashing", they probably imagine some CIA agents pressing down on somebody on a chair while a doctor injects some electrical devices into their brain. In reality, brainwashing happens every day, all the time. The old deception by omission is probably the most efficient brainwashing technique that is being used and Japan is a master at it.

But it’s not only Japan though. I still remember a couple of years ago when some English politician said something along the lines of "British Empire has never done anything wrong". I can't remember the exact words, but it was something along those lines. It's not just one politician either, the average person in England knows absolutely nothing (accurate) about what their country did in the past. The general sentiment is that "Yeah, we [[might have done]] some bad stuff, but we also did a lot of good, so no need to focus on the bad". Sounds familiar? Exactly what you hear from the average Japanese.

Realistically speaking, these historical issues between Japan and its neighbors will continue until there is a serious demographic change in Japan. The non-ethnically Japanese population would have to increase to at least 20/30 percent minimum, while most people in the country would have to become really liberal minded. It's only when people don't feel that ethnic identity attachment to history that actual changes can happen. Until then, these issues will remain, as the historical perception of the country is just a deep identity issue for most Japanese people. It touches their identity and their entire culture. Without the disassociation of identity and State, the most that can be hoped for is for the Japanese side to become softer and gentler in whitewashing their history, much like England, and most other European countries. They might start admitting their crimes in some way while keeping their population oblivious at the same time.

Do Japanese government officials still visit the shrine that houses some war criminals? Remember that being a yearly source of contention in Korea.

Some questions - the younger Japanese people I meet are horrified by Japan's wartime atrocities. And yet, who is voting for the conservative hardliners and why? Will it really be a generational change, or is it that the younger generation is horrified on the surface but ultimately doesn't really care?

HR insight needed 🙏 my boss set a standing weekly meeting with me and I’m often stood up. Sometimes he apologizes later but often not. Sometimes it’s because he has booked another 1-on-1 team meeting over that time (so he saw it in his calendar). Eg: He’s standing me up now even though we’re both in the same small office AND I emailed+slacked earlier to confirm his availability (no answer).
It’s hard to NOT think this is intentional.
What might a professional, healthy response be to this?

I have a friend who is mixed (3/4 white, 1/4 Asian). She’s white passing with a fully white name. When the topic of Asian hate comes up, she claims that she experiences it in the same way I do and that the world sees her as asian (I’m first gen Asian American, parents gave me an Asian name). But when being white benefits her, she “chooses” to be white (eg in grad school admissions, where marking Asian on your app might hurt you). I’m kind of annoyed with her taking advantage of the current focus
