Tough spot. I’ve been there before. I started as an accounts payable clerk as first job, 2.5 gpa in accounting, feeling hopeless, borderline depressed, obviously got rejected to Big4. But there’s hope!

First things first, sometimes you have to think realistically and know your chances are slim without direct relevant experience, if big4 is your end game but you can’t seem to get in, might need to consider going for a mid size or smaller CPA firm first. I DID THIS!

Second, polish your resume, know how to sell yourself even if you did something once, you still did it. I DID THIS!

Third, work on relevant certs, like CPA, CISA, etc. showing progress like passing a part of the exam will show your dedication. I DID THIS

Forth, work hard at mid size CPA firm, obtain a cert or make significant progress, and after a year at least, revisit applying to Big4. If you work at a CPA firm, chances are there is someone in your network that can get you connected so you can get referred. Again I DID THIS

My position as an AP clerk was 4 years ago making 30k, 4 years later, now I work at a BIG4 past 2 years (1 year in audit, now in risk and financial consulting) making over 100k!!! It’s crazy to think how far I came and feel very proud of my young career so far :)

Work hard, earn it! Never too late!!

I was rejected 3 times but now I just made manager. Keep at it

Do you have 150 credits? If not, consider going for a Masters degree and get a high GPA (3.6 or higher) is the best advice I can give you.

like

Based on my limited knowledge, I would say it is GPA and the fact you aren’t still in school .

like

How much audit experience do you have? What position are you applying for? Do you have a CPA? How long have you been with your current employer? What was your GPA?

like

@OP, I work in DC metro area. That is very odd, I honestly wouldn’t worry too much about them asking after you got some relevant experience under your belt. Almost all accounting firms will verify education during background check but GPA, they most likely won’t ask you during your interview.

@Omnicom1, thank you! I had some amazing mentors to help guide me along the way with good timing with the market, giving me some nice leverage :)

While in law school, they were fixated on that I didn’t have a CPA even though I was going for specialized groups

Another factor that might affect your application is being overexposed (applied and interviewed too many tines to a point where the hiring manager already has a certain perception towards you and has decided that you’re not a fit). I speak from experience with local firms where I applied and interviewed many times. At a certain point, I had to take a certain hint that I was basically wasting my time and that the reason I was being asked back to interview was to fulfill their interview quota.

like

OP, after my first job as an AP clerk, they never asked about GPA :), this includes when I interviewed with KPMG and most recently Deloitte. Experience over GPA any day!

Good luck bud 👍🏼

Thank you so much for the encouragement Senior Consultant 1 .
We all make mistakes when we’re younger , but it’s possible to fix it .

When you went to a big 4 after a few years , did they still care about your 2.5 GPA or at that point they don’t ask ?
I struggled a lot in my accounting classes, I wasn’t as motivated or as disciplined unfortunately

I’ve never not been asked for these items. Just not sure how much emphasis they put on it as an experienced hire.

Any recommendations on how to prepare for big 4 interviews.
What do they look for in a candidate ? How can I become more polished ?
Would appreciate any help

No Audit experience
Applying for audit associate
No CPA yet
GPA was 3.1

EY 1 were you rejected in undergrad or while employed elsewhere ?

I did not know they had a interview quota . So they just bring in people to interview , without being interested in them ?
Wow

Thank you Senior Consultant 1!
May I ask what state you work in?
A friend of mine started at PWC, moved to RSM and then to Plante Moran and even after 4 years working in PA and with a CPA they still asked for transcripts and GPA 😂

PSA: I had a horrible experience applying for a job at Devoted Health. Applied online and then got asked to schedule a phone interview. On the day of the interview, I waited 20 min and nothing happened. I emailed the HR rep, he didn’t acknowledge or apologize and just told me to reschedule so I did. I even sent a separate email to confirm the second phone call. Second day of the interview, same thing, no show. I sent an email letting him know that my time is not being valued. (Cont’d)

I am contemplating a move to industry (PE firm) and currently in PA. It’s a tax director role.

For those of you who have made the change. Would you say your satisfied or bored?

My fear is that my technical skills won’t grow as fast as in PA since the consulting work would be outsourced and I would mostly be a liaison for the advisors. Tax technical is very important to me.

Also wanted to see if there are any questions you would ask at the interview using hindsight?

Writing assignments as part of a job application/interview process — seems like a way to get free legal advice?

I applied to a job and, after the HR/Hiring Mgr interviews, was sent a writing assignment: 2 questions, asking me to propose specific legal strategies and make proposals for the exact 2 things that the interviewers stated they were hiring the role for. (Sorry for vagueness, trying to stay anonymous). Kind-of a turnoff; feel taken advantage of — not sure if I want to complete it?

I am a firm believer in “paying my dues” into a career, but when I look at the “tone at the top” I can’t possibly imagine how anyone would WANT to stay. The idea of working 50+ hours a week for the rest of my profession. My quality of life sucks right now. At this point I would happily take a pay cut to work less, but do enjoy aspects of public.
