I would recommend starting with a unit and seeing how it works for you! I’ve definitely seen success with gamification! Especially in regards to kids taking time to practice a skill to earn a badge!
It truly depends on how it is used. I've seen it work well in some classrooms but not in others. It really depends on how well it is set up and how much the students buy into it.
Here is a YouTube podcast by Thom Gibson about gamification. If you are looking to start it this would be a great way to think about it. https://youtu.be/SKzAqBQmTq4
I've had some success with it, but it definitely takes some effort on your part to get it set up and then some trial and error to work out any problems.
Also, if you have enough tech in your room (laptops, iPads, etc.), I highly suggest Classcraft, https://www.classcraft.com. There's a free version to start with, and the paid version doesn't cost too much each month. It can really help with gamification in the classroom and I've enjoyed using it myself.
