Yes, that’s probably what is happening. The vast majority of lawyers do not make big law salaries.
Couple issues: 1) big law is not indicative of salaries for the field in general; and 2) sites like Indeed relies on algorithms to estimate salaries so they’re probably including things like salaries for non-lawyers (paralegals, secretaries etc) at that firm and salaries for other law firms in the area. So, the Indeed “salary” is often not really representative of what the salary will actually be. Also, biglaw firms tend not to use sites like “indeed”.
I wasn’t talking about the Indeed estimated salaries. I was talking about the salaries in the posts.
I think so. I actually quit this forum a year or two ago bc it was mostly big law (which I not) and most of the content was unrelatable
Yep. Indeed is taken with a grain of salt too though. Many people here are big law & only think big law exists. That said, there is such a wide variety of salaries it’s wild to think
Also a classmate of mine fell into the trap of a small firm that pays a portion of contingency recoveries out to associates who did a large amount of work on the case - but that only effectively traps you at a firm for years or you will lose a ton of the bonus money you have been working for - talk about a trap it makes staying at a biglaw firm through your EOY bonus season a walk in the park.
Agree with this post. Never see anything close to what’s being talked about here.
As an owner of a very small firm I see very high salaries and I see very low ones as well. All
depends where you look and what you are looking for.
Correct. However I’m in biglaw and my salary is far higher than what indeed shows. Not sure why there is such a discrepancy
Yes. Most attorneys don’t make anywhere close to big law salaries.
No one with the higher end salaries you see here got their job on indeed. If you have a years experience (or even less given the current market) even if not a big law candidate, go through a head hunter preferably one you can get good feedback on. If this is your first job don’t worry about money find the firm with the best training and mentoring that offers a salary you can live on then lateral in 1-2 years
P.S if they tell you you’ll be handling your own caseload immediately and will get great experience this is likely a low end ID mill, that structure tends to have minimal training and young attorneys just wind up ingraining bad practices and subsequent hirers in the same market will likely know that.
Yet I sadly cannot find anyone to join my small firm here in south Florida.
I’m AMLAW 100 and we are not as high as other Big Law. There are certainly tiers of Big Law salaries with a stratosphere that most firms never approach.
Yea so there is a lot to unpack in here and on indeed- first biglaw is a misnomer there are many large law firms in the Amlaw 100 (and 200) that do not pay anywhere close to “market.”
Second, the information on indeed posts/reviews so it’s about as trustworthy as a yelp review.
