I got my puppy last January in busy season. Was honestly the best decision despite all the hard work. I was at home working loads yes but puppies sleep A LOT and crave a strict routine. She also was sleeping through the night within a week. I kept her on a set sleep/play/feed/potty break schedule the entire time. It all helped me take small mini breaks throughout the day which kept me sane. They can’t walk outside till fully vaccinated so it’s just play sessions inside. She did 1hr puppy socialization classes twice a week too which is when I blitz cleaned. The nicest thing was post busy season when the weather was nicer we could go out and enjoy it since she was potty trained, knew basic commands and enjoying walks.

Hey thanks for sharing this experience I am working from home and I def have the time …

I’ve also been thinking about getting a puppy and one concern has been that right now, I wfh every day. This works out nicely when puppy is very young and needs to go out constantly. But as puppy gets older and I’m no longer wfh all day every day (say 6+ months out), are there going to be attachment issues where the dog can’t handle being away from me? I almost feel the need to find ways to leave the house and work elsewhere some days just to get the pup used to being alone, a dog walker coming, etc early on so there’s no drastic shift whenever I do get back into the office. Would love to hear others experiences around this.

It depends! Some dogs will develop separation anxiety, others are chill from the start. You have to build up regardless so honestly working from home helped me. You start with 5mins, then 10mins etc. I did 5 min increments until I hit 1.5 hours then went up in 30mins. Working from home it’s easy to do the short ones every day or so (take trash out, get mail, go grab coffee, take a short walk, if in a house go into another room and close the door etc). I’m up to 6hours now, if needed. Every week I ensure she gets some alone time for various periods of time (I go workout, I grocery shop, I go out for dinner etc). There will be more work to do though when going into the office does become a regular thing, but will be same for all of us. Gotta learn and adjust to a new routine. My friend has had a walker come and do their lunch time walk even though she is wfh still so her dog is used to somebody else walking them at that hour.

Depends on your living situation. Would be hard to socialize in the city or go on dates if you have a dog at home and live alone.

I mean it’s all relative. I wasn’t spontaneously sleeping at guys places pre puppy. 😂 But I have friends who have also complained about this since getting a dog.

like

Yes. If you’re unsure you can foster

like

Do you have the ability to let them outside every 2-3 hours? The patience to train starting on day 1? The confidence to only use positive reinforcement? Do you have the money for specialty food, ER visit, vet visits, vaccinations? If you cannot commit to the next 10+ years (if a puppy) please do not get a dog.

like

All good points

Whatever amount of work you think a puppy is, multiply that by twenty and that is the actual amount of work it is. Do not get a puppy during busy season unless someone else is going to be able to walk/socialize it.

I live alone and got a puppy. It was a full-time job for at least 2 months. Even now, at almost 2 years old, she’s sitting here staring at me wanting to play at the end of a very busy day (for both of us). I love her and I’m happy about my decision. But sometimes I just want to rest!

like

Definitely rescue! There are so many dogs that need a home. Also, if you don’t want to train a puppy, you could adopt a dog that is a little older, all while giving a dog a second chance at life ❤️

That’s awesome EY2! They make life so much better!

Depends on age, if you’re getting a puppy, after busy season would be better IMO. Baker Tilly just rolled out a pet adoption benefit for rescues. Great new benefit.

My husband gave me my dog. She is really the light of my life. We lived in a 500 sq ft apartment with her (small pit bull) and my husband during the shelter in place. She makes me relax she forces me to go outside and walk. I wouldnt trade her for the world. <3

I just got a puppy and am not worried but it is a lot of work. I think it depends if you’ve had a dog before and if you have anyone at home to help you. If no to both of those after busy season would be easier. For breeder vs adopting I think you have to consider the breed. If it’s a breed with lots of health concerns or temperament issues sometimes going to a breeder can give you peace of mind and be a resource to you in the future if you have questions. If you just want a random dog and don’t have a breed preference than foster and adopting can be a great option too.

Seems most logical to do post busy season

Foster!!! I foster service dogs in training and it’s fabulous that way I can take a break when I need to.

Late to the party but does it have to be a puppy? If you go through a rescue a lot of the times the foster families can give you some info on the dog first including whether or not they're already house trained (which is more likely if you go up in age a little bit). Also going through a rescue sometimes you can do a tryout period. A couple of months ago i did a try out with a dog and she wasn't a fit for me at all (she had just recently come in so their profile on her and her behavior wasn't the most accurate) but it also made me realize I'm not really mentally in a place to have a dog rn either necessarily

If you’re doing it, always adopt don’t shop. Puppy mills are terrible

There are dogs in shelters because people don't spay/neuter their dogs and continue to buy dogs from bybs and mills. If people only bought from reputable breeders there would be no dogs in shelters. Zero. I have never seen a well bred dog in shelter. Pure bred? Sure. Well bred? No. Ethical and reputable breeders will always take their dogs back and many actively support shelters. Ethical and reputable breeders also do extensive vetting of potential homes.

11 months pp and still haven’t lose any weight despite working out 4-5 times a week. I gained 35 during pregnancy and 10 lbs more during breastfeeding. So I weigh 45 lbs more than I did before pregnancy. I’m still breastfeeding (combo feeding) and plan to do it till my baby is 1. I feel I’m starting to have body image issues. I feel really sad when I go shopping and looking at myself in the mirror to the extend I don’t like buying anything. I’m struggling to find clothes I would feel …

I know this has been asked 1047 times but I’m so beyond frustrated at this point. I CANNOT find cute maternity clothes. I’ve looked at pink blush, seraphine, H&M, all department stores, asos, target. Literally everywhere. HELP. I need clothes that aren’t just sweatpants that I can wear possibly to work and out of my house.

Our school instituted a district wide 50% floor/grading policy. If you give a student an assignment and they do nothing, not even write their name, or turn in a blank sheet of paper, they get a 50%. If they score less than 50% on a quiz or test, we have to mark it up to a 50%. This is the new norm and is causing kids to not do work, or just the bare minimum. It has taken the joy out of teaching and has taken away the accountability of students. Anyone else facing this? What do you do?

Do any of your kids make these moaning noises in class? Mine do, and I find it grossly inappropriate and disrespectful, but I’ve figured out how to stop it. I asked the kids if they care to have me meet with their parents, themselves, and the principal all together so they can describe what these moans sound like and why they are making them. A colleague of mine had this problem in her class and my suggestion worked for her too. The room gets quiet fast!
