Try to compartmentalize your effort. Not every project is worth 100%. Save yourself for the ones that might turn into good work/opportunities.

I’ve worked on several accounts like this (not as the CD). Every briefing would start with the CD or Account Director saying, “This is going to be a crazy one, but really fun.” Setting it up that way seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy. Then in every project retrospective there would be all these comments about how even though it was so crazy and everyone had to work three weekends in a row it’s so great how they all had a positive attitude- as if anyone can speak up without being punished. I’m kind of just venting here. At least we should have the right to not have a relentlessly positive attitude about being worked to death. And if we’re all pretending it’s okay it’s never going to change. But also it’s just never going to change. Especially not in this economy.

you take an hour every day and update your book. No more than an hour but you do it every day. Not one day off. When it’s stellar you shop it around town and land better jobs. When you retrain your focus back on yourself you begin to develop the confidence to decouple from others’ insecurities.

If you have to ask yourself “is this too much, it’s too much”. If you don’t have supportive leadership here are a few tips to help you survive while you’re figuring how to get out of the frying pan 1) document everything in writing. I see the schedule states they want to have x deliverable by Tuesday. I want to raise a red flag that this is going to challenging even with weekend work. “. Get their pushback in writing. 2) take time off. Aka. “I understand everyone is working hard and know we have xx deliverable but I have a personal commitment I need to do this weekend that I have been pushing off to help meet this aggressive schedule. I want raise the red flag that I won’t be able to get to xx without support” f they want to yell at you make them do it in writing. You want to have a paper trail for when you go to hr. They are bullying you.

^ is a "Creative Art Director" a senior role or a mid-level role?

It’s not an issue. It’s just that “art director” or “copywriter” already implies “creative”. So it’s somewhat redundant to have creative art director as a title, like calling a Honda a “driving car”. I’ve seen it done before, but usually from non agency types who’ve done technical writing or B2B who now want to rebrand themselves as “creative”.

uplifting

I knew it was time to leave when I realized I could be doing more for the same amount of effort. Creative impact in agencies can have a diminishing rate of returns when your team is rotten. Being the ‘new shiny thing’ every couple years helps build books too. The head creatives tend to give the new creatives plumb opportunities. You’re the new toy. Don’t duck that up. But you will be asked over and over again why you can’t stay anywhere longer than 2 years once you start going fro CD gigs. It will become a challenge. But one you can overcome if you’re talented and kind. Employers begin to assume you have an attitude problem if you don’t have a 4+ year stint somewhere (which is absurd IMO)
