I gained 35lb with my first, lost 30 of it by 1yr and gained 28lb with my second. I tried to make healthy choices and keep moving up until 37 weeks when it just hurt too much and I was in early labor.

I realized after my first just how hard it is to lose weight when your lifestyle changes from constantly being on the go to sitting and nursing a baby, being tied to the play mat & house, and being sleep deprived the first 6 months. I didn’t restrict myself a ton during the second pregnancy (still eat dessert every night) but was more cautious because my body/joints/mental health just suffer when I am holding onto extra pounds.

Don’t stress about it though! Do what feels best for you.

With my first I went from a super active ballerina working physical jobs (bartending through school etc) to an office job during my pregnancy. I went from 115lbs to approx 185lb at delivery. It did NOT all come off. (Body change and a lack of commitment on my part)

With my second I gained approx 35 lbs

With my third I gained only 21 lbs but was on a strict GD diet.

I think its super normal to gain a lot with your first because your body is in shock and changing. Some of those changes don't always seem to go back - not sure my hip bones will ever be as narrow as they were, even when I've lost weight - I don't think I'll ever see 115lbs again (I'm at peace with that)

I gained 45 with mine. It is a horrible myth that the weight falls off by breastfeeding. With that, I would give myself more grace the next time around. We are growing and nourishing a human.

like

Same… I exercised, ate healthy, had no issues and still gained 45 lbs without trying. And BF didn’t help either … if I did it again, I’d hire a trainer for my pregnancy as walking everyday wasn’t enough apparently.

Here's the deal - every woman is different. I gained 61 pounds with my first baby (started at 141). I was huge. I felt awful by the end. You know what else I did during that pregnancy? I walked a half marathon (and walked consistently to train for it)....didn't matter, I still gained 5 pounds/week. I gained a little less in my other two pregnancies, but my lowest was 38, I think. Its just how my body carries babies. Don't put too much emphasis on the number. Stay active, eat reasonably, you'll be fine.

like

50 is a lot to gain intentionally. Don’t stress over the number. Eat healthy, acknowledge cravings and your body will do what is needs to. There is no perfect number for each woman. More weigh also means more stress on your body, harder to sleep, harder to drive, swelling, etc.

like

Very different for twins, you’re right that 20lbs in the first 20 weeks is a generally established guideline for twins. Singletons aren’t inherently high-risk and 20lbs can be a normal amount to gain for an entire pregnancy.

like

I was about 35 with both mine. It’s realistic (for some pregnancies) to stay in the guidelines. I think the difference is why you’re gaining. If you’re eating total junk in crazy amounts and gain 70lbs, that’s probably not going to make you feel great. If you’re making good food choices & moving how you can and gain 70 lbs, maybe that’s just what your body wants/needs. Pregnancy cravings and treats are fine in moderation. But you don’t want to treat it as a crazy free-for-all and go nuts. You probably won’t feel the best, and pregnancy can make you feel kinda crappy on its own.

like

Agree so much! I get awful headaches when I eat crummy food when I’m pregnant. I would love to be able to eat more junk but it’s not worth it.

It really depends on your body though. Like sure, some gain 50, some gain 20 - both can be considered realistic. I gained 40. I was huge haha I also worked out my entire pregnancy, was sick for 6 months, and ate pretty healthy for the most part. And sure I need to lose that weight now, but what’s important is that your baby is healthy and your body is able to digest sugars so that you don’t test positive for gestational diabetes. It’s hard not comparing yourself to others. Like some women are all stomach, or just spread out everywhere [me]. Just enjoy your pregnancy. It’s such a short time.

like

Gained 63-70 with both pregnancies! I also had noticeable bellies very early. I think how your built plays a part. My doctors never thought there were any issues. Most came on at the end. I’m currently almost 4m post part and nearly back to my pre pregnancy weight.

like

Everyone’s body Is different. So no 50 lbs generally isn’t bad but there’s many things to consider.

Due to my current weight my dr recommended no more than 10-20 lb weight gain. I gained 10 lbs during my pregnancy. But I also had other complications and was high risk, so I was mindful but not restricting myself.

If 50 feels good for your body & baby, don’t stress over it. Some people naturally gain more or less

like

You might gain 50lbs, but 25-35lbs really is ideal and healthy. I gained about 20lbs with my first and will probably gain the same this time (14 weeks and have not gained weight), average BMI for both. Upside is that I’ve been super healthy in my pregnancies and was back to pre-pregnancy weight in about two weeks with my first.

like

Don’t stress if you gain more! I gained almost 45 my first pregnancy. Super healthy pregnancy and no issues with blood pressure or GD. Gave birth to a perfect almost 9 pound baby. Back to pre pregnancy weight within a few months.

like

I gained 40ish pounds but a lot of it was water weight (my ankles/legs were huge and then returned to normal 2 weeks postpartum).

like

Same. I retained a TON of water during both my pregnancies and ended up gaining around 50lbs as a result.

Depends on where you start. And if you have any conditions prior or developed during pregnancy. I gained about 35-40 first time but I was only 125 to start. The next kids I gained less but still weighed in at the same end the end. Never got back to pre-prego (125), not sure I wanted to. But it does not “fall off” if your breastfeeding that’s for sure. I didn’t get to a stable weigh for myself until they were done feeding.

like

I gained 25

like

gained 50 lbs with all 3 kiddos. Every body is different. Some of us can just look at food and gain weight when pregnant (🙋🏻‍♀️🙄). I will say, it definitely got waaay harder to lose that weight after as I got older.

like

This is me. I gained 70 with both, despite being very active and eating healthy. I was one of those people who shed a ton with breastfeeding and I got back down to my pre pregnancy weight in a few months.

Inwas so sick. Gained 6, 8 and 5. Babies all weighed more than I gained and I was thinner after giving birth. Babies were fine and I evened back out. I def was about 15-20 lbs overweight to start each time. Everyone is different. 25 is definitely manageable if you eat similarly and are able to stay active.

like

I gained 33 with my twins.

like

I ate when I was hungry (appetite didn’t change much) and didn’t focus on gaining a minimum number. I gained 13 pounds. Baby was 50% in weight. For me the genetics I had pre-pregnant were still in play while pregnant.

like

I feel like weight gain range is like BMI. They picked a number without considering anything else about your physical structure, mobility, heart health, BP, activity levels, etc. I gained about 60 lbs with my first. I’m 5’10” with broad shoulders, 60 lbs on me is really different than 60 lbs on my 5’2” petite best friend. Baby was 8,8 and 22 inches. My second I gained about 40 lbs. Baby was 8,1 and 21 inches. After my 2 years of lactation ended, I’m “back” to my pre-pregnancy weight but my body is very, very different.

like

Gained 80 pounds. Went from working out every day and eating clean to junk and not working out. I was so sick in the beginning I ate just carbs. I regret not taking better care of myself, because losing the weight has been a struggle.

like

Gained 65 lbs with both

like

I’m only six months pregnant at the moment, and I’ve gained over 50 pounds. I’m freaking out about it, but doc seems to think it’s ok. I wouldn’t advise trying to gain this much tho. It’s pretty miserable and I can barely move most days.

- Specific hustles that aren't worth the upfront cost/hassle in setting up or that are super hard to hire for
- Policies/attitudes you'd adopt going into things this time around
