I know I shouldn’t seek validation on this app but I’m 26 and on a 53k salary coming up to 4 years exp in the summer…am I on the right track?

Each one and his own pathway. I know some who are in their 40s and are yet to earn 53k, and some who are in their early 20s on twice that. Ultimately what matters isn’t whether you are on the right track financially but whether you are on the track you want for your life.. and only you can answer that!

So fishbowl is dominated by people working in finance / MBB who love to throw their salaries around.

£53k is a very good salary after 4 YOE outside this bubble.

Also the fact that you're behind on buying a house is more to do with the London housing marking which almost everyone without some sort of generational handout are struggling with.

If buying a house is a priority, you should either look to move jobs which should give you a bump and / or make tradeoffs in other parts of life to achieve it

You’re doing well, comparison is the thief of joy

Focus on what makes YOU happy. I don’t want to get all religious, but in Christianity the bible says “comparison is the thief of joy”. All I’ll say though is this, a common theme I’ve noticed with people that I went to uni with who are earning top 1% salary, including the various conversations I’ve had with senior people, is that money means nothing if you don’t have time for your kids / family / loved ones. When it’s all said and done, money won’t mean anything when you’re on your deathbed.

You’re right, it’s not. Definitely thought it was. Sentiment remains, however.

I’m 29, lead data scientist, £95k plus bonus, pension etc etc. Plenty of us about. Had some other final stages recently up to £135k.

£53k is an excellent, excellent salary for your age in the UK. Full stop. Don’t let anyone make you think otherwise. Fishbowl is not representative of the real world.

But when considering whether you are on the ‘right track’, like others may have said, don’t look at salary alone. How are your relationships with loved ones, friends? Do you get to enjoy your personal interests in your own time? What about this biggy - health? The right track consists of ticks in all the other boxes.

like

In the US, most people are at manager by that age making £120-140k in the Big 4. FAANG developers can be making £390k by then as Staff Engineers. Around the same for VPs in IB or PE after 4 years. You should think about jumping firms every 3 years or so to market correct your salary. Staying put will keep your salary low, even if you’re promoted.

Sc2 - have you looked at the actual salaries of real people? Tons of public servants earn 50-100% of their salaries in OT. There are publicly disclosed salaries of subway mechanics earning $300k+

Comparison is the thief of joy my man. I was 23 and on 50k at ACN, quite far ahead of my friends. Now at 26, they’re overtaking me. I had an M offer at EY for £75k, and I now do ad-hoc day rate contracting which nets me a decent amount, but no house for the foreseeable future (building a startup on the side too, I’d rather try that whilst I’m younger).

Lot of my friends are now breaking 6 figures, buying houses, getting married etc. but we all go at our own pace

If it helps I’m 29 and on £60k, taken a winding path getting here so far and not expecting that to change for my future. I have friends working as artists just keeping afloat and others who went into big law firms and private equity now owning £1m+ properties and driving Porsches. Each to their own I say.

It’s all about perspective and what bubble you live in. I’m 23 and on £150k, many of my same-aged friends on more (£200-£500k).

Cliché: marathon, not a sprint
Another cliché: money does not buy you happiness

Why let keeping up with others determine your happiness? What do *you* actually want out of your life?

My TC at 22 was over $100k in the US, I followed career passions and a relationship that became my marriage. I took salary cuts all the way down to £20k in the UK when I was 29. Now back to >$200k a few years later in the US. I never personally optimized for money, but I always know I can make a living as long as I can keep my health.

I had an incredible time in my youth w/ life-changing stories from work and travel in over a dozen countries on three continents, fab lifelong friends, and now an amazing partner. Could've lived in a lower CoL place to stop paying rent earlier, but no regrets whatsoever about not having more stuff. (I need less of it!)

Look, even if you primarily seek happiness from stability like owning your own house - know that you're about to get really good deals on housing prices too as BtL and other landlords exit purchases due to interest rate hikes. In the meantime, about a fifth of the UK population is using food banks and deciding between heating and eating.

Cherish what you have and what really makes you happy.

M2 were you doing strategy at Big4?

Everyone is different and you’ll never truly be happy if you keep comparing. For example, I’m 27 and on 90 and look at others thinking I’m so far behind. It’s one big game

If at Deloitte then SM.. which is pretty good going at 29!

27, 5yoe and on 69k TC. You’re doing absolutely fine and on track. We all think we’re behind when we compare but you need to find enjoyment with the track you’re on. Set your own goals that aren’t comparing yourself to others if you can.

I think my main thing is I haven’t yet bought a house, I’m not married, I haven’t quite mastered the world of investments and I feel like I am falling behind on what people consider important life things

Happy for you, well done!

29, 76k. At your age I was on 62k.

I’m 29 and on 57k base with 2.5yoe in London and 1yoe elsewhere. There’s time to buy a house and you are not behind on anything. Rate race in London is real, but remember there will always be people who earn more than you, but many many more who earn less.

I'm excited for the new position, It has so much potential and the people seem great. Truth is I find my current tax field is super interesting but damn it's complicated.

I am at a Pharmaceutical Tech startup and we are hiring!

We are looking for Product Mgrs who have 4+ years of exp in client facing roles where you gather requirements, design solutions, work with developers to build the solution, test the solution end-to-end, and deliver to the client. The work itself is very similar to what we do in consulting but you don't have to worry about firm activities, utilization, etc.

Compensation is highly competitive

Is it possible to get another firm to consider an unvested pension benefit as a clawback to compensate for in a signing bonus? For example, I have been working at D for 2 years and I’ll have $5k in pension benefits that will vest at year 3, but not if I leave. Or will they only consider things that I have to pay back explicitly?
