This might be on the extreme end but depending on your state she could look into getting a license as an in home day care so then she’d qualify for you to get reimbursed (https://childcareta.acf.hhs.gov/licensing). Some states have more significant requirements so this may only make sense for a state with fewer requirements.
Would the reimbursement cover if you had a nanny or just day care? If it includes nannies too that may be another option to see how to get her to fall into that bucket to qualify for you to be reimbursed.
Busy season but only when you use daycare extended care not when a family member watches your kids. Does that seem fair? Watching a baby is a lot of work regardless of whether or not they are family. I know I will have to reimburse my mom more for the longer hours Bc it’s just the right thing to do but it’s going to hit me pretty hard financially. Any advice is appreciated!
It might be challenging this close to busy season, but for coming years, it might be worth talking about switching engagements. The Firm has been very accommodating of limiting my out of town travel after I had a child. Another option that we give parents is the flexibility to go home, then work after their kid’s bedtime. So if they can accommodate you leaving early and catching up later that could help reduce costs too (but this will definitely cut into your sleep).
It’s great that you have your mom, and you really can’t beat the love of family. But if you are looking to reduce cost and all else fails, perhaps a nanny for the extended care hours? Or even hiring your mom a neighborhood babysitter as a second set of hands for a few hours (since they’ll be reimbursed) to lighten her load?
If your mom wants to claim the income as an independent owner, then you can get reimbursed
