I know I’m not the only one burned out on insurance. Has anyone thought of moving into a different career? If so, what?

I have felt that way for a long time. But any other job I had I just didn't really like as much. Sometimes I just need to hit the reset button and then come back and I remember why I like INsurance so much

I’ve been in the insurance business for 25 years and was recently let go from my employer of 10 years due to a violation of corporate guidelines with regard to social media. I’ve been wanting out of this legal Ponzi scheme for years so I applied at Home Depot and couldn’t be happier. Sure is the pay less? Yup. But guess what? I’m happy. I looked at it this way. God gave me a chance to do something I’d be happy doing. Screw the money. That will find me. Being happy in life means more. And to be honest, everyone I’ve met at the store has been there for over 20 years. Says a lot about the culture. And the benefits are great. Now with that being said, am I giving up my licensure? No. I’ll keep it as a back up or maybe get licensed and sell a policy here and there. But this is my “out” of the insurance business

Feel this SO MUCH

If you are feeling burnt out consider changing companies. Especially as an underwriter, some places can treat you like a machine and not a human. My happiness in my underwriting career improved 100% when I moved to another company.

What company were you at before and which company are you at now? Just trying to gauge which ones I should be avoiding lol

I agree with moving to a different company. I’ve been in the insurance industry for 15+ years. Felt burnout in claims so went to Agency side which opened a lot of new doors and I gained greater perspective. Often a change in environment and management can ease the burnout. That, or consider a long vacation to unplug and recharge.

Yeah maybe stick it out another 6mos and pivot? go into private sector/non carrier risk management? TPA? I’ve had prior colleagues work toward teaching degree and have since become teachers. Others went to law school. Others moved from claims to UW or being a Broker. Sky’s the limit based on what appeals to you. Just know you’ll likely need to take a strep back as you learn the ropes of a new role, and then climb.

Yeah, I would love to go to the data analytics or business intelligence area. No more insurance for me.

Yes, almost every day. I'm considering sales or finance. But I'm not sure if I can land a job in sales or finance.

I agree with those that say change companies.

I thought I was burned out after 9 years. Stepped away for 4 and didn’t feel fulfilled during that time, longing to go back, and went back in.

Same here I was totally burned out and retired in February. Went back to the same agency 6 months later. Sometimes stepping away gives you a new perspective as well as a fresh start.

I got burned out on trucking operations and came to insurance, but depending on your role your skills may be highly transferable into a trucking operations or safety role... there is never a dull moment in trucking. The stories are both wilder and more disgusting

Additionally if you did sales, recruiting is also an option... but i can't promise you'll be selling a product to believe in and even then I've heard some crazy recruiting calls there

Yeah since I'm in sales, thought about taking on a different sales role in a fintech company. Didn't make it to the final interview, but they were looking for 3-4 years of client facing experience 125k base.

So maybe will apply again at the end of the year when I have 3 YOE

Good luck with that. I’ve been in the business for 25 years. Tough getting out of it especially with credentials and licensure that you’ve worked hard to obtain

Me, I feel so burned out on insurance after 8 years but it's all I know. I dream of getting my loan officer license to dabble in but haven't done so.

I honestly thought most loan officers are commissioned. Unless they are working for a big bank

I was burnt out and needed a change. I explored different technology that our industry uses and looked at what was available. I have now transitioned to sales with massive support from an amazing company.

I'm not sure if I'm burnt out or getting bored of dealing with BI claims (unrep/attorneys) after years of handling BI claims. A few friends went from BI into workers' comp and is suggesting I go that route. But I'm a bit hesitant since I don't know how different it would be. They're telling me is not as fast paced and the work load is more manageable. But I feel like every company and dept is different. What's to say I go to company A and it's nothing like company B where they're at.

I feel this. Right now I'm hesitant to move from sales at my current company over to a different sales role in a different company. I've met that team and it seems great and all, but I'm hesitant about leaving after almost 3 years here.

Definitely time to switch companies for sure

like

Definitely not the only one. I recommend you stop working for the insurance company and move over to the broker side. Still a lot of work, but the money is better, especially if you are highly technical with designations! Good luck!

I've though of literally every other career. I've thought about looking into other sales jobs, but I just don't really feel qualified to switch anywhere. I'm following to see if anyone suggests something I haven't though of.

I’m considering getting out of insurance but not sure where to go either. I’m interested in Sales however I have not done it before. I’m
Be only been on the account management side. I’m at a decent salary so not even sure where to look to get the same elsewhere.

Me too. Thinking about shifting into sales or freelancing. My sister has been encouraging me to try getting into VA.

What part do you feel burnt out on?

Just about everything. Time for a change

I see a lot of differentiating in post about RIsk Assurance and Risk Advisory. Would someone mind breaking that down by which groups fall into these roles? I am Tech Assurance but also on a rotation where I get exposure to other groups in risk, ie - Internal Audit, GRC and Tech Risk Management. I do like the risk realm, although I would hope to do something more technical in nature and not so much check box. Thanks ahead of time!

Have you ever dealt with a colleague that believes in extremely (in my opinion) outdated or even just false claims and treats them as scientific facts? I work with several older men but one of them practices "provocative therapy" as in you just play the devil's advocate with your patient and side with the negative half of their thinking. In theory I could see this working situationally, but as a whole philosophy regardless of the patient's issue I think it's ridiculous.
