@student, @associate1 is right. They usually are paid but are could be more competitive. Still don’t let the competition stop you from applying. I personally always hated the idea of working for free. I know you get paid in “experience” but you still have to eat, travel, buy books, clothes, supplies, etc. Also, you’re working and adding to the productivity of the workplace. Even if you’re simply filing and getting coffee, you’re adding value to the company in a short amount of time. The courts just said student-athletes are employees and should get paid even though they get athletic scholarships. In a perfect world, I believe the same should be the case with all interns. However, I understand it’s not feasible for some companies due to their size or the industry they are in.
