Layoffs at Walmart corporate 😬😬
So I've had 2 hiring managers and several recruiters from Amazon reach out to me about applying for some open positions with the company (android). I completed the coding assessment and now they want me to go through a round of 5 hour interviews next week. Is there a good chance I'll be hired if engineering managers are reaching out to me? I'm really not sure how badly I want to work for them and I don't want to be laid off months after being hired on. Anyone know what Amazon hiring is like?

Wow this really puts things into perspective, takes a lot of courage to chase what you're passionate about. Awesome post! Best of luck on your future endeavors
So sorry for what happened to you OP :(! Thank you for sharing this, takes a lot of courage to do this! And it is beautifully written. Good luck in your search!!!
It's kindaaaa a long post, and also really personal, but it means a lot to me. I was initially debating about posting it on here since it gives up my identity, but given the recent layoff drama, I hope some of you can find comfort in what I wrote. The best part about this app for me was knowing I wasn't alone in my misery, both during my employment and after. Anyways, after being laid off earlier this year, I'm finally ready to update my LinkedIn and face the world. Unfortunately I think that means I'll lose access to fishbowl, so I wanted to wish you guys well! It's been a fun one, and I'll miss you all (especially you, KPMG Senior Associate NYC troll). Best of luck out there. And remember... this is just a job - it shouldn't be your life, especially if you don't love it.
Your LinkedIn profile is attached, damn. Your fuckin hot 😛
The thing about managing your own career is that you force yourself to work a lot and take on responsibilities. Commitment to managing it successfully means negotiating the benefits you want for what you're willing to produce and creating an environment that benefits you. Your advisor was lousy and you had no way of knowing that because he was your only advisor. Market conditions were favorable for you to take a layoff -- a workable option in my opinion tho not everyone always agrees. Rather than calling this "dropping out of corporate America" I think a more apt name would be 'lessons from my first engagement doing a multi year implementation: a rough first year in the job market followed by a break.' Im sharing this feedback because I think you're going to want another corporate job, corporate jobs can be healthy and sustainable if you make them, and it seems immature to lump all of corporate America together after experiencing it for one year.
@D2 - Thank you! I used squarespace because it's hands down the most modern-looking platform. It's definitely on the pricier side, but I don't like ugly websites and was not about to put my name on something that was half-assed :) Fun fact... I made all my graphics in PowerPoint and had a 100+ step project plan, so I guess old habits die hard.
Lol as appealing as being Fishbowl's Bachelorette sounds... Gonna have to decline, sorry A1. Not trying to out anyone and also don't want to make anyone feel bad by not mentioning them. Also I'm publishing my post on LinkedIn today and will likely get a bunch of non-related views (as well as hate mail, oh well 💁🏻)
Thanks D4! McK1 and PwC1, I'm obviously not going to make blanket statements, but I will say I had at least 20 different Big 4 (but mostly PwC) friends who I barely knew message me on Facebook thanking me for posting what they "couldn't put into words" or were "too scared to say." Had even more actual friends text me and say the same thing. While I wouldn't say it's everyone's experience, I don't think it's as much as an anomaly as PwC1 is making out. There's definitely a disconnect between the culture these firms promote to the rest of the world and the culture employees at the bottom experience
OP you may have found your calling, you have a stellar writing style
@BAH1 - Thank you for your honest feedback, but as I stated in my blog, "despite the title of this post, I am in no way counting Corporate America or even consulting out, because maybe the right fit is still out there somewhere." It's a long post, not surprised that you or others may have missed.
As for titles, both your title and mine are accurate - but I am trying to spread my message that people shouldn't feel pressured to spend their lives chasing society's idea of success to as many people as possible... Which takes a title that actually draws them in. But thank you for the thoughtful comment nonetheless 💕
PwC2, I am so sorry you lost your job. But I am so confident that you will find something so so so much better in the near future. You are smart, you are accomplished, and getting laid off does not make you any less of a person. Best of luck out there. I am so happy I could help you ❤️
To the rest of you, I'm about to change my LinkedIn information and publish my post on there, so if you don't hear from me again, it's because I lost access. But as SA1 so graciously pointed out, my website has all my social links. If any of you ever need to talk about getting let go, feeling lost, or just life in general - I'm here for you. Good luck with everything! 💚Deb
@PwC 4, I typed out a really long comment addressing all of your points - and then I realized, why bother? Sure, I could sit here and attempt to explain to you why your attitude is toxic or how you're wrong about, well, everything... but the fact that you chose to [incorrectly] make assumptions about me while writing snarky personal attacks on an anonymous app says a lot more about you than I ever could. You say I need to find myself, but I think it's pretty clear who the insecure one is here. No wonder why the PwC ship is sinking so quickly.
BAH, yes, because assuming I'll never be successful in creative work or that I live off of my parents are valid points? I also don't see how it's possible for me to actually personally attack someone who's anonymous, but okay.
I have no problem factually shutting down someone's argument - if you'd like an example, please head to the top post of someone asking people to stop bashing PwC (or click this link http://joinfishbowl.com/N4jn/9xoJLxUouu) and scroll down to the response by PwC 2. It's the one with 200 upvotes.
I don't see the need to fully address PwC 4's comment is because it's pretty clear he/she is only here to attempt to belittle me or bully me in an attempt to get me to stop talking about the realities of PwC (when in reality, it has the opposite effect). There's no argument behind comments such as "I don't care about you nor does anybody else is the firm" but at the end of the day, haters gonna hate and I'll just keep doing my thing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Feel free to keep responding, at the end of the day we all know none of you would ever dare say anything negative to my face.
@SA1 - Thank you and all of your upvoters for driving more traffic to my LinkedIn page than I have ever seen. Stay thirsty, my friends. 😘
To everyone else - thank you all for your encouragement and support! Will always ❤️ my fishbowl fam.
I'll miss you too buddy. Always remember, KPMG numba one!
You're cute. I'd never lay you off
Hi guys! Amazingly enough I (somehow?) didn't lose access to fishbowl. So I just wanted to thank you all again for your support and kindness and messages and LinkedIn requests and being awesome in general. I plan on writing a lot more posts on life/career/happiness/success (seriously, I have an entire content tracker on Excel already because lol would you expect anything less?) and maybe they'll also speak to you like this post did. Or maybe they won't, and that's okay too. Anyways, thanks again for all of the love. You are all amazing people!!
I just realized this is a great way to uncover identities on fish bowl.... How many views do you have on LinkedIn? 😳
I hope your experience at PwC isn't the norm. That sounds dreadful.
OP, thank you. I can't tell you enough how much this helps. I was just let to on Friday out of nowhere, and while the past year of working here hasn't been as awful as your project, I wasn't happy. If anything, this job made me more complacent at a time in my life where I was fighting to be anything but complacent. I wasn't really happy with the direction my career would've taken here, and it took getting laid off to see that clearly. It was a wake up call that a), a decent salary and benefits don't balance out unhappiness, b) a job doesn't define me, especially if it doesn't allow me to grow my own way (as advertised by leadership).
