Not to rain on your parade, but the headlines are bad because it is bad.
“The scope and speed of this downturn are without modern precedent, significantly worse than any recession since the second world war,” Powell said in prepared remarks for a webcast event with the Peterson Institute for International Economics.
The pandemic, which has already cost at least 20m jobs, has caused “a level of pain that is hard to capture in words”, he said.

God I’m so happy this quote is about the economy and not another “covid causes mysterious complications” post or something. We need more emphasis on the economic ramifications of this pandemic.
WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE.

For-profit media will always veer toward the sensational

Idk about that but I like WSJ as a more moderate, data based source.

I wish the same, but it will never happen. Dramatic headlines about bad news gets clicks, and freedom of the press is a protected right. I agree with you know that in this situation, when fear is pervasive and fueling everything from policy decisions to the future of our communities, that there has to be more moderate opinions presented in mainstream media.
As bad as it is, look at the statistics. Most people dying have underlying health conditions and are over 65. Some under without, but sido the math and compare to the 50-70,000 deaths annually for the common flu. Still waiting for the justification.

Are we really still talking about how this is the same as the flu? 85k deaths in a few months with incredibly restrictive SIP.
I remind myself the person who wrote the article is probably working from home like I am, seeing their company uncertain about the future, and looking to generate revenue/positive reviews through more clicks

**by fueling fear and leveraging panic reactions. That person must be cognizant of the impact their actions and articles have on human behavior.
Don’t hold your breath.....
Part of our job is to create attention grabbing headlines. Shouldn't come as a surprise the media does it too. Also this shit is bad.

Also, with so much shit spreading that is trying to minimize the severity and question health official warnings i believe people who already do that woll try to use it as proof. Like showing how many recover isnt helpful but you do see news articles about people helping others and creative ways to make social distance more social.
But again, it looks bad because it is.

It’s always been that way though regardless of the event. That ever tragedy or event will be milked to the last drop. It’s easier to reuse sound bites and videos than to go out and get new content.
Media companies are about making money, not about helping you feel good.
As a consumer you are responsible for changing this business model. Find and follow independent journalists, not media companies as a whole.

You’re right that news outlets have learned that the more negative and dramatic the headline the more clicks it gets, but most of the news about corona is actually pretty bad. Just don’t read it.
