Was super busy the first 2 real weeks of work but have been slow since the holidays (25-30 billable hours per week). Are any other paralegals struggling with billable hour requirements? I have 5 years of experience in corporate transactions, M&A, and real estate work, and have never had billable hour requirements. As a government lawyer, I make 6 figures, have excellent benefits, no billable hours requirements, more time off than I know what to do with (including mental health days), a pension, a 401(K), option to chose whether to WFH or not, no weekend work, no working before 8am or after 5pm. It seems like so many lawyers in private practice are unhappy.

The next time someone in core asks you to work long hours and respond to emails during the evening, tell them your AIP % doesn’t allow you to work beyond the billable hours.

I had crazy burnout inducing weeks and I am now on a slower pace finally for the second week this year (~20 billable hours wk). Not sure how well I performed in those weeks prior but deals closed and nothing went wrong at the end. Now I think about what’s lacking in my life (partner, joy, expertise in my field haha) and I just don’t want to work or care to work anymore. Anybody in a similar boat? How did you get out of this?

Weird Question: Insurance Defense Related. Started at a new firm about a year and a half ago. The partner insists that the paralegal he has bill for discovery. I find this incredibly odd as I’m not “killing it” with billable hours. This seems odd…… do any other insurance defense firms work like this?

Hello, I am graduating shortly and starting bar prep. Should I accept an offer to start at my firm early or stick with the post-bar start date? It would be hourly to avoid the billable requirements and I would be off all of July for hard-core bar prep. Aside from risk to bar prep, are there any other downsides to starting hourly?

This year has been insane. 200+ hours every month. July has been really been slow though. I’m at like 35 billable hours this month. I’m a first year in transactional and staffed on deals that haven’t picked up yet. PLEASE HELP! I’m a first year commercial litigation associate at a boutique firm. I am deciding between two offers. One is to go in-house paying roughly the same as I make now. The second offer is from big law as a commercial real estate associate, paying double. I would love to go in-house and never worry about billable hours again but the big law money is super tempting. Where should I put money I am saving for a down payment on a house? Time frame is about fiveyears? I’m concerned about putting it in savings as it will just lose value, but I don’t want too much equity exposure either. What about REITs?
