Don't worry about it. I've been slow the entire month so far billing even less than that. Don't care.

Enjoy the slow times to mentally prepare for the insane times! This is what WLB looks like (to the extent it can be considered WLB) in many biglaw practice areas.

Just keep telling the partners and people you work with that you’re looking for work. I always do it in an email so I have record of the fact that I was asking for more work and keeping people aware of my situation and not just sitting on my butt doing nothing

You’re not alone in low hours! I think I had 12 hours last week? I’ve been watching a boatload of CLE videos and cranking out personal projects while I listen to them so that when the heavy workflow hits I’m not drowning in work and personal projects. I get the fear but if you ask for work like @AA1 said and still don’t get any, just try to enjoy it and get your own stuff done! It helps me with the anxiety of low hours because I feel like I’m doing something.

Are any other paralegals struggling with billable hour requirements? I have 5 years of experience in corporate transactions, M&A, and real estate work, and have never had billable hour requirements. I'm in a new job now where I do and I'm nowhere near meeting them. I'm getting a lot more admin work than billable work, and it's stressing me out.

Has anyone taken leave as a result COVID-19, whether under FFCRA, EFMLA, or something else? How does it work with billable hours and salary? I am looking into it because I will never be able to meet my billable hour targets while helping my Kindergarten child with remote learning.

How much do in-house attorneys actually work? I know there’s no billable req. and I always thought they were chilling with a cush 9-5/9-3 gig, no nights no weekends. But now I’m not so sure it’s so rainbows and butterflies. Looking at pre-IPO start ups and newly IPOd companies non-FAANG but in tech. My main desire is WLB. Should I try a boutique with scaled down billable hours or in-house with no billable hours? Help!

Other than higher pay (I didn’t become a lawyer to get rich 🤣) what is the benefit of working for BigLaw, or private practice in general? As a government lawyer, I make 6 figures, have excellent benefits, no billable hours requirements, more time off than I know what to do with (including mental health days), a pension, a 401(K), option to chose whether to WFH or not, no weekend work, no working before 8am or after 5pm. It seems like so many lawyers in private practice are unhappy.

The next time someone in core asks you to work long hours and respond to emails during the evening, tell them your AIP % doesn’t allow you to work beyond the billable hours.

In response to a LinkedIn post about how lateral candidates are wanting time off between jobs because they are burned out, one partner said this. If you’re at a firm that thinks 2700 billable hours is normal and does not entitle you to feel burned out, then you need to get out. I’m am outraged on your behalf.

I had crazy burnout inducing weeks and I am now on a slower pace finally for the second week this year (~20 billable hours wk). Not sure how well I performed in those weeks prior but deals closed and nothing went wrong at the end. Now I think about what’s lacking in my life (partner, joy, expertise in my field haha) and I just don’t want to work or care to work anymore. Anybody in a similar boat? How did you get out of this?

Weird Question: Insurance Defense Related. Started at a new firm about a year and a half ago. The partner insists that the paralegal he has bill for discovery. I find this incredibly odd as I’m not “killing it” with billable hours. This seems odd…… do any other insurance defense firms work like this?

Hello, I am graduating shortly and starting bar prep. Should I accept an offer to start at my firm early or stick with the post-bar start date? It would be hourly to avoid the billable requirements and I would be off all of July for hard-core bar prep. Aside from risk to bar prep, are there any other downsides to starting hourly?

This year has been insane. 200+ hours every month. July has been really been slow though. I’m at like 35 billable hours this month. I’m a first year in transactional and staffed on deals that haven’t picked up yet. I’m hesitant to reach out for work because I don’t want to be overwhelmed ... but I also am getting anxiety because I literally have nothing to do all day. Anyone else in this boat?

PLEASE HELP! I’m a first year commercial litigation associate at a boutique firm. I am deciding between two offers. One is to go in-house paying roughly the same as I make now. The second offer is from big law as a commercial real estate associate, paying double. I would love to go in-house and never worry about billable hours again but the big law money is super tempting. Advice?? Is the money really worth it?

Where should I put money I am saving for a down payment on a house? Time frame is about fiveyears? I’m concerned about putting it in savings as it will just lose value, but I don’t want too much equity exposure either. What about REITs? Wouldn’t it make sense to invest in something that is correlated to what I’m saving for? Any thoughts welcome. Btw I already own a house so party of me wonders if I should just make additional payments and get the guaranteed ~3ish percent that is my mortgage rate
