Thanks, everyone!! Really appreciate the insights. For dog walking, day care, etc - how much do you think you spend monthly, on average?
@Senior Copywriter 1, that's the situation I'm likely to be in... i figure if I don't start putting life ahead of work on occasion, no one's going to do it for me :) might as well start now and bring some unconditional love and laughter and fun my way
Honestly we had to get a second dog because of the guilt and anxiety our older dog had from being alone so much. Not that much more expensive in the grand scheme of things and it's just more love in the house 🤗
I'm a single lady with a pup and I have a dog walker who comes every day. I live by myself. I try to leave work by 6 every day and like 9 at the very latest. If I still have work to do, do it from home. I definitely got some flack from a few people for needing to leave early when I first adopted her but I've started putting my life ahead of work on occasion.
I have a dog walker. On the weekends we try to goto pet friendly places to spend time with her too! If my husband or I know we need to work late, we coordinate. She's not alone for more than 6-7 hours, which is still a long time for me.
I was at adcolor today and digitas were talking about some of their incentive schemes... they offer pet insurance and extend their bereavement policy to pet parents. I was so impressed. There are some of us who have decided to only ever be pet parents and I give massive props to an agency who acknowledges that
Definitely recommend having a yard / dog door situation if you can. I feel the most guilty about having my dog wait to pee.
I have a dog walker as well, but it's about $20 a day so not viable to do daily. He went to dog daycare when he was younger, but that's also pricey and there's a risk of getting injured.
If Rover.com is in your area, it's like Uber for dogsitters and a great solution to get dog time!
My dog walker is 19/walk for reference. The pricing is not unheard of. I get notifications when she gets picked up, dropped off and what business she did. I can also see where they walked her. The owner also lives across the street from me and usually makes last minute requests work, and she likes to pet sit my dog! I say there is no barrier to having a dog, everyone should have one 😇
I'm grateful to have a dog friendly agency, it sounds silly but it's one of my pre-requisites when I look agencies. I'm also lucky that my hubbie works from home so my older pup has the best of both worlds
My boyfriend works much less than me and we give our pup several walks a day. And then whenever I am home I make sure to give her lots and lots of attention 😊
My dogwalker is $20/day so it's about $400 a month.
Thanks, all!
I ended up having to leave my pupper with my parents because I always work late and my commute is so long.
When I was single, I moved across the street from my office so I could walk my pup. Then I ended up on a client that was an hour away so I just asked my managers if I could work from home after 7 or so and they were fine with it.
If you are just now getting a pup I would recommend getting a dog that is 1-2 years old. They still have some puppy left in them but can handle being alone for a work day much better. I use doggy daycare on Wednesdays or days I know I will be working late to break up the week and it is $20 a day at a really nice place if I bought a package up front. I also get to work from home most Fridays. When I first got him I set up an old iPhone with the app called presence which can turn it into a camera to watch what he did all day and make sure he was okay and calm my nerves. And some people at work leave every day to pick up their kids, so I don’t feel guilty leaving to pick up my dog from daycare. I know a dog isn’t a kid, but my dog is the most important thing in my life just like their kid is, and that is how I chose to spend my personal life. Also, don’t feel too guilty leaving the dog for the work day because a lot of dogs naturally sleep more than humans, so even when he is at daycare he takes naps throughout the day. As long as you give him enough attention while you are there and don’t leave him for too long of a time on a regular basis, the dog will be happy and you can find a schedule and system that best works for you
