It’s more interesting for me to be able to see a lot of different orgs than to stay at one place for years.

Cyber consulting is really lucrative IMO and exit opportunities are plentiful. It really depends on timing and the projects you are apart of. I have had a variety of clients and different cyber maturity levels. Some colleagues have had the same client since starting. Everyone has different experiences in cyber consulting.

It’s how you sell yourself and your knowledge and technical skillset. A lot of the cyber job posts I see prefers consulting experience

Because there’s no rolling off a crappy industry job.. plus I like to work with bleeding edge stuff and see a lot of different environments and problems.

Yeah, basically the same! I like new shiny things and try them out! :)

There are great industry jobs out there. My experience in big 4 cyber consulting was working with clients with immature cyber programs, working too many hours, timesheets, and too many power points. I’m not interest in the Senior Manager+ track. Too much selling. To each his own! I work with bleeding edge tech, smart people, get paid pretty well, and have work life balance. It’s not all perfect but it’s pretty good.

I wasn’t at FAANG, but a senior engineer in cyber org in fortune 30 company. Moving to big4 SC in cyber cloud space scored me a ~35% base salary increase. Context: 3.5yoe Hopping every 2-3y for competitive pay seems to be a pattern for many folks.

Starting in Industry could be better for someone who wants to be a techie/specialist. You might have higher TC in your early years but the ceiling is lower. Consulting gives you a chance to start as a specialist and then choose what you’re interested in. You also get promoted faster because you’re not part of a specific team with limited positions/ don’t need your line manager’s job to get a promo. If this is your first move, moving from Consulting into industry is easier than moving from Industry to Consulting. They won’t treat YOE as equal. It’s different for your second move, since it’s easy to go anywhere if you started as a consultant and then got industry experience(+ the connections).

For me, I’m here to build my skill set and then to exit to industry. It’s tough to find good cyber jobs with less than 5 years of experience.

What is your current interest? Are you highly technical pounding away at your keyboard at night because you are a hard core nerd? Or are you just exploring, don't really know what you want and just wanna get into the industry? If Option 1, don't join consulting. Go to industry where you will be more valued and likely gain better experience. If Option 2, join consulting so you get exposure to different areas in cyber and clients. This is the best path to figuring out what you want to do.

Haha I know. I need to change my title so you guys dont build a profile on me 😂

Consulting is superior at giving you perspective. It's too easy to get locked into one size fits all patterns in industry.

Since the start of the pandemic, I have been fairly safe and really haven’t gone anywhere (I think I went to TJ Maxx once in a moment of weakness lol). My family on the other hand hasn’t taken any precautions and actually did contract COVID. They keep telling me I’m paranoid and need to start going out but with COVID being worse now than it was back in March, I rather just not. I just want them off my back and wish they would respect my decision to not expose myself like I respected them.
