I know this will vary from firm to firm, but what is the likely consequence of regularly billing a decent amount, but less than the bonus requirement? Let's say you're at a firm with a 2000 bonus requirement; will you be able to stick around for a while billing in the 1700-1800 range or will you get pushed out quickly?

The min numbers are BS and firms can't afford to fire people for not hitting them highest average hours billed in Amlaw for a single firm was 1867 last year and 1916 before that. Targets are likely set hire to set expectations high, give them a BS firing reason, and excuse not to pay bonuses

like

Again there are people that get up to 3700, 1 of those freaks plus two 1k is very close to 2000 average. That said it likely depends on the proportion of high billers to laterals and actual hours comparisoms. Keep in mind though that the reported stat is the firm with the highest average in Amlaw. Some firms like Watchell basically don't take laterals in and likely have few laterals out given very special comp so the lateral in and lateral out thing is likely just something they say so that people don't think deeply about it (assuming it is true to begin with).

1700 is pretty far off from 2000. If you’re 1950+ I think NBD, but if you’re 300 hours below, everyone else better be slow too and you better have been regularly asking for work.

like

I would say depends on how busy your group is. If whole group is "underperforming" then you probably won't get cut before your group peers, but it does put you at risk (see pandemic furloughs...). If you're under your "required" hours and everyone else in your group is under water, you will get side eye. It will get noted in your file and there will be several conversations about work allocation before they actually ask you to leave... My firm basically has an unspoken rule that you get a few years to get your act together (or get your group to give you more work) before they toss you

like

Does your firm not have a minimum expected number of billable hours? For mine, it’s minimum 1900, with 1950 being bonus eligible. Anything less than 1900 is technically underperforming, but if your whole group has been slow than no one would say anything to you about it.

like

AFAIK it's just 2000 for bonus eligibility, there's no separate minimum that I know of. I'm sure this is very firm specific, so I'm probably barking up the wrong tree.

like

I don’t think you will be pushed out for several years at most firms.

Varies by firm and group but nobody is getting fired at my V50 for a year or two, and most likely much longer, of missing hours by 100 or 150 or so. In some ways someone billing a decent amount but missing “minimums” slightly is a great situation for the firm. Someone on the bench who can help when needed but you don’t have to pay them a bonus. Not like we sit around and talk about associates in those terms but it makes sense, right? Also, firing you and recruiting someone else would cost more than it would be worth, too. Now, of course, as for promotion prospects or not being higher on the firing list if times get tough, or any of the above applying if you are turning down work, especially if others are crushed? Those are different.
