I’m good with required sex ed including contraceptives, free contraceptives, subsidized plan B, safe procedures, sponsored efforts to destigmatize, criminalize misleading practices that delay choice, criminalize invasions of privacy and causing trauma in decision making, and then we should be good with a 12 week limit except as medically required by the doctor. (12 weeks is good bc of how weeks are counted and the reality that some people simply don’t realize given irregularities or knowledge.)
Not subject to review, not requiring procedures done in any specialty facility, no admitting privileges required (for example in TX there were laws on who could refer and where they could happen to prevent abortions, even a few wks in).
I think we’d be fine with a constitutional amendment guaranteeing the right to an abortion prior to some number of weeks in that neighborhood.
Another distinction needs to be made for abortions beyond that point when medically indicated or in other exceptional cases.
I guess. Just like if every state had passed a law banning slavery, we wouldn’t need a federal constitutional ban.
We could have a federal minimum, like 12 or 15 weeks plus medical exceptions/fetal issues thereafter, and allow states to opt for longer periods. So Alabama can stick with 12 weeks and NY can do 26 or whatever.
Something like over half of the abortions in this country are before 12 weeks, so it seems reasonable. This would also handle probably most “oops” abortions, whereas people who need it for medical reasons/feral issues would continue to be exceptions.

Most of Europe is 12 weeks, the ban at the center of the Dobbs case was 15 weeks. I think the majority of the country may be satisfied with the line being drawn anywhere from 12 weeks - 25 weeks. There would still be extremists in both parties that would push for no restrictions and complete restrictions.
Time and again, surveys have shown that majority of American people are what you would call pro-choice - this isn’t a both sides issue that needs compromise. Extremists on anti-abortion side have been way louder and finally got what they wanted
If every state passed their own abortion law then might as well codify it federally.
And no SC is not off the hook. Several “misled” senators, threw healthcare into chaos, and changed 50 years of precedent on the idea of privacy.
If the justices behind this travesty of a ruling all commit seppuku in the next month, we’re good
