I lateraled to a new Am law 100 firm 8 months ago, and came in as a first year because I switched practice groups. I’ve had some busy months, and then some downright laughable months when it comes to billables (like less than 30 for the MONTH). I’ve brought this to the attention of the partner I almost exclusively work with multiple times, and he repeatedly tells me not to worry because he is happy with me. Work is seemingly consistently picking up, but should I be worried re review/comp/etc.?

Hi fishes, I was tapped for an internal transfer to the research division of our company. I was lucky to be made a manager in my current workstream w/ only 2 years of experience (typically takes 4-10). The new dept originally offered me an managerial role based on that, but after speaking with higher ups, said they can’t give me a managerial role because of parity issues with other members of the team. The new comp offered with the analyst grade is only peanuts above my current pay. Advice?

Joined as a senior associate in January 22 (peak season) and got bonus only 10% considering staff criteria. People with the same qualification joined in June as direct seniors and got 14 %. 🙁

Senior Staff Consultant (Engineering) in a M->HCOL with 15 YOE currently making 95k. I feel I am underpaid. I am from another country working in the USA on an O1 visa. Q re the term “colleague.” As a senior associate writing an email to opposing counsel, I sometimes refer to the partner on the case as “my colleague Mr. Smith” or the paralegal as “my colleague Mr. Smith.” Opposing counsel just advised that I shouldn’t use “colleague” because that term implies that I’m the same rank/role. But I hate saying my paralegal Mr. Smith-seems possessive. Do others avoid “colleague”? What term do you use instead to introduce someone on your team of a different role?

A junior associate has taken leave 3 times in the past 2 weeks and I’m working w him on an IPO (just the 2 of us). I missed a deadline for producing the due diligence reports because I had minimal help. Shoddy first drafts were provided and he was super patronising - basically thought he was doing me a favour since I was leading the transaction and was client facing. I’ve complained to the partner but the partner said he doesn’t see what took so long. Literally on the verge of rage quitting.

I know there are a lot of posts joking about associates unionizing. Out of curiosity, though, what exactly would that look like? i.e. what do you think the repercussions and benefits would be?

Are large firms disorganized? In a quest to quickly get work done, and to be thorough, it seems to me that large firms just throw bodies at the issue. No project management, no clear delineation of duties, no planning.

Anybody accept an offer and then get a different offer you want more? How’d you tell the firm you accepted at? Besides the obviously burned bridges, anything else to be concerned about?

How to handle a midlevel/senior that calls for every little thing? I understand the need to call during and leading up to closing to make sure things progress and are clear, but it's annoying to be busy working on something and have to make this person's deal/questions front of mind. It's toxic.

Are corporate senior associates who are pretty good/competent but not gunning for partner now valuable again in this hot transactional market? In the past seniors always seemed to be pushed out if not a clear partner candidate/no book and struggled in the lateral market but it seems the market has changed that for the time being. 8th year M&A senior here - very burnt out but also very competent.

Is criminal defense less stressful than big law transactional practice?
