I lead a team of women (ranging from 2-8 years into their careers) and want to advocate for their career growth with management. I’ve made the case for promotions and raises (have been pushing for this for months and keep being told “soon”—but I won’t give up), but I also want to try smaller asks and would love suggestions. Are there any books, one-off classes/trainings, virtual events, memberships, etc. that you’d recommend? Thank you!

It’s great that you’re looking out for them! What do these women want out of their careers? Can you tailor any of the smaller tasks to their goals?

I hold regular 1:1s and ask for their interests beyond their day-to-day responsibilities and look for opportunities that align. I was able to get one an opportunity to do a competitive slide that made it to the our client’s CEO, got permission to include two who are interested in customer experience on a senior-level training, etc. Still feel like they deserve more—honestly I’d love to do more mentoring, but I’m pretty burned out.

What discipline are you and these women in?

Storytelling with Data by Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic could be a good group book, esp for the more jr ones. I took a class with her once and enjoyed it. Particularly good for helping folks realize that charts aren’t enough for an audience to understand what you want them to see, and that it’s on you as the presenter to frame the data to tell a story anyone can understand.

I was told I was getting a promotion and they would let me know about next steps soon, (I was pregnant at the time but couldn’t yet say anything) well after I did.. haven’t heard anything about that promotion so far...sad

“How Women Rise.”

Thanks! Just ordered.

I'm an account manager, but want to get better at helping and managing my team. So, I've started doing some of the copywriting myself so I can get a better feel for what's involved, what's needed, and how I can help others improve. I recently attended an SEO conference and then spent a weekend reading everything I can get my hands on. I've also got a reading list I'm building out. What are your favorite books and sources to become better at copywriting?
