If it were in your shoes, I would not wait for them; I’d be proactive and tell them “Im interested in coming back. Keep in mind, I’ve this great year of additional experience, I’m at the associate director level and that’s the kind of position I need. You would be getting the benefit of that great expletive. And for my part, my comp needs to be $X to be worth considering making the change. So, let’s talk about what that would look like.”
Keep in mind, if you’re burned out in your current position, you’ve another option; do a broader job search. Don’t feel like it’s a choice between burnout or old place.
Might as well talk to them and explore it. Let me know what you need to make the move then hold them to that.

Be very upfront that you wont come back for a lateral title. Then it’s up to them on how much they want you.

“I’d love to come, let’s talk about what an appropriate title and salary would be”
Absolutely do not boomerang back unless it’s for a level up
Years ago, I helped launch/did all the advertising and marketing for a new company ( in-house position) . After two years, I had an issue with a “new” manipulative co-worker and I left.
Six months later, the company owner wanted to hire me back. (They had fired the other person. ) He asked what it would take to hire me back and I said a salary $20k more than I’d been making. ( it caught him off-guard)
So, when I came in to talk to him, he said, “You threw out a number when we talked, but what would it really take to have you come back?
I feigned confusion and replied, “ I don’t understand your question. He explained again - not mentioning money specifically. Again, I said that I didn’t know what he meant.
So, he said, “You asked for $XXXk, but what would it really take for you to come back?”
“0hh, I replied. “$XXXk.” ( same number.)
We talked about why I deserved it and I got the money I asked for and the title I wanted. (It pays to know what your worth to someone. )
If your former agency is ASKING you to come back, you can - and should - ask for more money and the title you want. You’re in a good position to negotiate IF you want to go back. Don’t take their hint; ask for the money you want. Good luck!
No need for a lateral move at this point. Either they move up to AD or you don’t make the switch it’s not worth it
Just tell them you think you’re up for a promotion at your current agency soon and wouldn’t move to the other one unless it’s AD. boom.
