I left big law last year for small law but I stay on this bowl because you’re all so funny (in a good way!). Misery brings out some great gallows humour.

Just to clarify, some of you are funny in a bad way also.

Thank for affirming and validating me me (to be clear, the bad type of funny)

How was the transition? Any regrets?

None! Lot more flexibility but different kinds of stress. It’s not significantly less hours or responsibility, but the freedom to not be chained to your phone constantly and feel that crushing stress of biglaw makes all the difference.

I am a registered sales assistant which means I have my series 7. I also have the 63 and my Life & Health license. I was a financial advisor but the role is commission only so I decided to take a role as an assistant for some time to learn etc. I really like my role, but I only make 32k a year and after taxes I only take home about 25k. I have a gut feeling that I’m not being paid market value but it’s tough to find comparable salaries. Do you think $15.38/hr is a fair wage in this case?

Hi everyone. I am currently a CA student, working as a Taxation Executive in a manufacturing industry for the past 3 years. My profile includes handling of direct and indirect taxes in the company ranging from preparation of the working upto the entry of outstanding and payment in books. Can someone advise on the CTC i should ask for?

Hi, any lead technical consultants at Perficient out here. What is the average good pay considered for this role. Just got interviewed for this position and would want to know a rough $$ figure before my negotiation with HR.

Also, can you please highlight job stability within Perficient. Do they have a bench policy in case a project gets over.

Hi everyone. I’m getting ready to take the FL bar in February. I’ve been licensed in TX for 7 years but have more or less been asked to take the FL bar by my firm so I can handle more client representation. It’s been a minute since I’ve taken a Bar exam. Other than taking Barbri, does anyone have any good recommendations for how to handle Bar prepping while also working? I’m planning on asking my firm to scale back so I can have time to study, but I don’t know if there’s anything beyond that.

I suffered from severe depression during law school and my grades were bad in the first few years, only managed to get to top 15% of the cohort in my final year after seeking help. I’m in a V30 now but it looks like whenever I try to lateral up, they only look at my grades. Any tips?

Anyone switch practice groups as a fifth year or above?

First year here. Working with a partner for the first time. They asked me to work on a due diligence memo. They told me to write about 2 paragraphs. They provided examples but all were 10-15 paragraphs long. I received edits this morning and I get back 6 paragraphs. I felt like I could have wrote the 6, but I wrote the 2 like I was told. Is this a normal thing? I haven’t had a partner do that to me before. Now, I’m frustrated because I feel like I didn’t do a good job.

Is regulatory law really hard? I'm a first year and half the time I can't even understand what the partner is asking because it's on such a subtle nuance of the law that has huge implications. I thought I learned a thing or two about these statutes in law school.

Law schools in Toronto - I am currently working as a Senior Auditor at EY & finished my CPA modules in less than 12 months & successfully passed CFE, September 2021 (Fasttrack) while working full time. I am really interested in getting into a top law school here in Toronto but unfortunately I had a low CGPA (3.15) from undergrad due to some unfortunate incident, mostly impacted my grades. I strongly feel i can score 170+ on LSAT; question DO I EVEN STAND A CHANCE TO GET INTO ANY LAW SCHOOL

When you print deal related stuff for due diligence at home, how do you discard? Do you always shred everything?

I moved across the country in the fall to join a V5 firm and I absolutely hate it. I’ve decided to leave after bonuses in January to seek out a job where I may have some semblance of a weekend and perhaps some mental stability. I’m finding it extremely difficult to deal with the mental burden of just “hanging in there” and selling yet another year of my life to the biglaw machine. I know this is a choice I’ve made, but the toll it has taken on my mental health has been shocking. Any advice?

I thought a certain project was put to bed, and I was free to start on a motion. And now a bunch little things on the certain project keep coming up. So, I am over here mad about work stoping me from getting to other work. Cray.

I feel like billable hours discourage attorney efficiency and incentivizes folks to drag work out or take longer to complete assignments (excluding tangible due dates).

Have firms seriously considered other ways to measure productivity outside of the billable hour?

When you thought you went to a market paying firm but they took months to match the salary raises and are making them effective as of OCTOBER FIRST 🤨

My firm wants us back in the office at least 4 days a week, which is whatever. I love WFH but as long as I can do it 1-2 days a week and come and go as I please, I’m happy enough. But I’m having a big issue… I cannot be super productive in the office. I’m totally fine at home, but in the office, I can only be productive with brief or firedrill tasks. If I have to draft something? I just spin my wheels. Cont..

What’s your firms policy on coverage when you know you’ll be out and fully unreachable? If you’re at a firm where you find your own coverage (seems to be the most common) what happens if you are physically unable to find coverage from your network of colleagues but also unable to be available during a certain time frame? Kick it to the partners? Pray and hope for the best?

I thought my firm had the worst admin & HR in the world, but I interviewed at this other firm and they seem to be EVEN MORE disorganized. Why does admin departments at law firms have to suck so much?

Associates— how long did it take you to feel competent in your role / as an associate? I’m currently a first-year (steadily approaching second year) and while I’m no longer totally clueless, there are some days that I still just feel like a complete idiot. Just wondering when (or if) that’ll ever end.
