I was in a similar situation 3 years ago. I left consulting due to a newborn and wanted to be around for my kids. I literally work 3-5 hours a day, and yes, I’m not fulfilled at work but you know what? Having flexibility to work out, ride bike, hike, grocery shop, etc while kids are at daycare, then having them come home to a dad who isn’t stressed makes my career choice that much more worth it. Stick it out, it gets better and as the bond with your newborn grows, you will want to be around.

Any corporate finance role in my opinion. I spent the early part of the pandemic automating many of my processes.

Not crazy AT ALL!!! There’s a reason so many of us stay where we are. Welcome back to the living! And there is a way to make life manageable in consulting!

Give it time? Sounds like the slower pace is gifting you underutilized mental capacity. Give yourself more freedom to find new and productive ways to deploy that extra capacity. Updating your workout routine, new hobbies, side hustle, educational pursuits, house/home projects, reconnecting with friends, etc. Find joy in the things you can invest your energy in outside of work.

Nothing wrong with boomerang but you shouldn’t do it so quickly. I’d give it 2 years.

No constructive advice but am in the same boat (title reflects former firm) so know you aren’t alone! Haha

Alternative thought: some people are wired for more. As kids grow, you can outsource the “help” - neither you, nor your wife need to do laundry and wash dishes. Not having an actively engaged mind relative to the degree of challenging work you want is the perfect setup for midlife crisis and lots of other bad things. Boredom causes a lot of trouble. Agree that trying it out for a little longer is probably not a bad idea, but just know that you can be your best self for your family when you are happy. And neither you nor your wife need to spend an hour a day folding laundry.

Shouldn’t you be asking your wife this question?

Can you strike a deal where you work remote for 1-2 years and then get on the road? Totally possible in the current world. I’ve also personally used a night nanny for a brief period when my spouse was traveling. I won’t lie it’s expensive and I was doing this as an M and an SM so the $s pinched but it was worth it in the long run.

What kind of consulting did you do previously? Any chance you can dm or share where you’ve found the amazing WLB?

I did M&A consulting (DDs, PMI, Carve Outs) and now am in a corporate strategy role.

Give it 6 more months- but start your own thing! Even if it’s as simple as launching a card game. At the end of the next 6 months reevaluate. I created a card game and it’s done surprisingly well. It's called Quarantine King. It’s in Amazon, Walmart, some retail locations, and on our website- QuarantineKing.co. Been so much fun! Use the code “fishbowl” to get 20% off.

Our 5 month old started daycare about 5 weeks ago. We’ve already had to keep her home for 2.5 of those 5 weeks due to catching various illnesses (croup, rsv, brinchiolitis, etc). Both my wife and I have been sick most of that time as well (gotten it from the baby). Wife is thinking we get a full time nanny for the next 4 months to help the baby build antibodies. Cost aside, is this feasible / worthwhile to go thru the effort / finding the right fit, only for 4 months?

Starting a new job next week and I am freaked out thinking how will I manage a new job, meals, house and a 3.5 year old at home! Husband is in a start-up so he pretty much is locked in a room with his work and meetings all day. No idea who will attend to the kid when he wakes up, or make his meals and feed him, be with him in his online class, and put him for his naps. Any moms here who switched jobs during lockdown and had a young toddler at home? Any tips will be helpful. Awfully freaked out!

I never do this but I need some objective advice. My wife is 5mo pregnant and my sister is getting married. Wedding was adjusted because of COVID but she set the date knowing I might not be able to attend as I’d have to fly there. Now I’m conflicted because if I attend, I’d have to quarantine for 2 weeks away from my wife and miss a couple DR appts. I’m her only support where we live. Would be stressful for her but I’m getting immense pressure from my parents to attend the wedding. Advice?

Is there anyone that is teaching from home and your students have returned to school? How did you get permission to do that and how does that work with kids in the classroom? I am guessing there has to be an adult in the room while the students are in there but is there another teacher during their planning or do you have to get a sub? Our reentry has been delayed and I am working with HR to try and stay home while students aren’t there but it looks like I’m going to have to take some Parental Leave once students do return because there is not a plan otherwise.
