I live in and absolutely love California. No other state compares in my mind (industry, career opportunities, salary, culture, diversity, food, weather, landscape, political inclination, etc). If I were to consider temporarily (2-3 years) moving to another state to accumulate more wealth on the way to FI, what states (specifically cities) would make me least miserable?

I’m a native Californian and love the state. But I think the answer here is Texas. Low taxes low COL and reasonably good QOL in Austin (which I’ve actually spent time in) or Dallas (heard it’s nice). San Antonio seems okay (spent a very short amount of time there). I heard mixed things about Houston (good food, but that humidity!).

I feel the same way about CA and just tried Houston - I’m now likely going to try to sell my house and try elsewhere. I think it depends on how much you like the outdoors and weather - literally no where compares to CA in that regard but I’m considering Colorado or somewhere where while snow may be inconvenient, I could see the pro of being close to skiing for instance... but I miss CA and wonder if I just need to pay the price lol

From what I understand the city sucks from a culture, design standpoint and is very spread out, hot as balls most of the year and also floods heavily every year

Austin has a relative HCOL for Texas but no State Income tax at CA compensation levels will feel like a dream. If you work remotely and care about weather/nature/outdoors the most, check out the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe (Crystal Bay, Incline Village, etc.).

Washington or Texas to avoid the state income tax, pay low rent, not be too far from CA, and not be in Florida.

Austin for tech, Dallas for finance, Houston for hurricanes

I’m in the process of doing the reverse. Have lived in Dallas the last few years largely to save on costs, but I’ve decided it’s worth higher costs to live back in California. Can’t beat the outdoor rec opportunities, the weather, the people, etc.

Yeah it’s got it’s issues! But what place doesn’t?

Washington state.

Oh no, I’m from there. Trust me- clouds all the time. Rains a lot. People are purposely not friendly. Look up the Seattle freeze and SAD (seasonal affective disorder). Traffic sucks.

There are 7 states in the US that no sales tax and state income tax. Take your pick. Taxes, housing costs, transportation, and food - these are the biggest expenses in most people's lives. If you can get a tight grip on even just the first 2 categories, you've won the battle.

This is ... not true. All but one of those states have sales taxes. They might be called “gross receipts” or some such, but the only states without sales tax are (“NOMAD”): New Hampshire Oregon Montana Alaska Delaware

I’ve considered Vegas and Reno for the cheaper costs and flight proximity to California

I’d reconsider on Reno. Just had some friends leave SF for Reno because their jobs have gone permanently majority remote as a result of COVID. It has a huge Tesla presence, quick flights to major CA cities, and it is literally on Lake Tahoe. If you actually do like diversity, and not just fusion cuisine, then try TX.

Denver

You’re not gonna save a ton of money if you live in Denver and still want all of the perks you describe above. You’d have to live outside the city a bit which would defeat the purpose.

So you're looking for low state taxes and COL with a reasonable amount of culture, cuisine and lifestyle?

What associate 2 says. Didn’t think that’d be so hard to decipher...

Phoenix isn’t terrible

Sorry Phoenix is, in fact, terrible

Florida. No State taxes and beautiful beaches. But, it all depends on what you're in to.

Puerto Rico? Love the place, tax advantages and if I don't have to travel for a long time, plan on moving there from CA

I'd say Arizona. Beautiful but in a different way.
