You’re an ACD, you’re fine.
More than sexism? lol
Enjoy it. During the next ten years I am sure Advertising will fire everyone over 35.Look around . Everyone is so young. They want you to struggle to make a decent salary and once you do they don’t want to pay you any longer. Advertising is due for a class action ageism legal action. The age range of the workers does not reflect the population in any way.
15 years from now when they start firing everyone over 40, you’ll be very glad you still look like you’re in your 30s...
This. Also eventually think about whether to share your graduation year on Linkedin...people will do the math.
Cry me a river
Humble brag much?
You’re an ACD at age 30, you’re doing fine
I’m 26 and look 33...this side of the grass isn’t greener, promise.
This is the worst post of all the posts
Wow. You can’t compare those two kinds of agesim. One, by definition has loads of experience but is discriminated against for it. The other one, is an entitled brat. I REALLY didn’t wanna go here, but OP... are you a white male by chance? Either way, you should screen shot your response and show it to your 40-year-old self one day.
I’m a CD who also look 25, and (if that count) I’m a woman. Look doesn’t matter, it’s what you do that count.
OP - You know they take you out into a field and shoot you when you turn 40, right? Enjoy. You’ll be able to sneak 5 extra years in.
This is my biggest fear. Thinking at a plan B since day 1
I used to worry about this but as I became older I just got more invisible. Don’t let your looks hold you back, impress them so much that they can’t deny you a promotion
That’s my outlook too.
Be so good they can’t ignore you.
Hey, at least looking younger than u r will let u cradle rob.
Stay classy Senior Manager 1
I’m a young (and even younger looking) Asian woman. I think all of you are doing way better than me.
Same!
It’s not. Keep being smart and bringing fresh ideas. That’s all that matters.
Try that new product from Just For Men called "Just for ACDs". It adds a tad of distinguished grey to the temples. If that doesn't work, try doing better work.
In some careers looking young will hold you back. I used to temp for a baby-faced architect who had this problem. People want grizzled architects, lawyers, mechanics, etc. Advertising is the total opposite, looking young is key to longevity. Consider yourself lucky, and keep it up.
To give you a serious answer… at age 30 ACD is completely respectable and on track. Comparing yourself to others is usually a way to feel disappointed no matter if it’s about your job or how good you are at making music or whatever it is. This will sound like something you don’t want to hear, but years of experience matter when it comes to getting to director level. So perhaps that one person who got promoted to director level at a young age is an exception. All of that said, if you do feel like you should be in the director level one way to do that is to switch agencies. Someone out there is probably looking for a director and they may have fewer misconceptions about who you are and what you can do because you can control the story of who you are and what you can do from the start. I was in a role where I was much older than everyone else and because I was staying at the same agency, after a couple years, they still had in their mind that person who I was on day one. So I switched agencies and got promoted. Did that again and got promoted again. You just have to play the game according to what you need and what people are giving you and what you think you can do. Don’t get too caught up in being loyal to an agency if you feel like you truly are being held back. That said, at age 30, ACD level is completely respectable and on track.
Oui, I concur
I'm 30, mid-level, and look like a disgruntled 16 year old. At least you're on track and not behind!
I’m 40 and look like I’m 90. So there’s that
In all seriousness, you can tweak your appearance to appear older. Not changing who you or your personal style, but adding some polish can help. I got similar feedback when I in my late 20s. No longer an issue for me because I’m practically a dinosaur
