I am a working mom, who went through similar dilemma after my maternity leave to whether go back to work or be a full time carer for my baby I stayed with my baby for about 9 months and then went back to working. It was very tough for me initially to be away from kid for prolonged hours but that actually made me appreciate him and my time at home more. Not to mention the economic relief it gave to us. Baby’s needs require lot of cash and in today’s cost of living supporting a family with only one income is a lot tough. So if you can’t get back to a full time consulting job try taking a flexible work/ remote work options. The job market is pretty good for talented women leaders.

Do what is right for you. If your heart is at home with your kiddo and you can afford it as a household - do it! You were successful in consulting more because your character and resilience than ability to construct a good PowerPoint. Those traits will always be there. For comparison, I am finishing out the family leave the firm provides and while I am super thankful for this time, there is a hunger in me to get back into the mix. I love being with my daughter and struggle to not start the 5 business ideas I had during this time. Different make ups and neither one is wrong. Go where you are inline with your heart and you will be the best parent to your child you can be.

It’s SO real! I feel like I plan my life between nap times!! There is so much pressure on the primary care-giving partner right now. In our household, everyone is feeling the pinch of this season (hubs is back at work already).

When my father passed away he told me two things: 1) “you [my children] were the best thing that has ever happened to me. 2) Dont work so much and make enough time for your family

Yeah you are right!!! Family is very important!! We can change jobs but being able to share love with family is one of true life’s blessing and we should never sacrifice that for anything in life. Time thT we have with family is priceless Your dad was a very wise man!

Can you please comment the type of consulting you performed and what kind of roles you’re looking for? So those of us who can help will reach out to you. Wishing you all the luck! Also, I was laid off from D a few months ago - if you need a sounding board, I’m happy to help

Thank you. I am into finance, risk management and project management. I am inspired with all the posts here and will start applying soon.. any help in referrals and connection is really appreciated.. my very best to you!

Do you have a working spouse and would you two be ok with you being a full-time parent. A parent-caretaker is the best gift a child can ever receive. To keep your skill set current, why don’t you do gig work from home on Upwork?

Will look it up.. thank you

My wife chose to stay at home and raise kids (have 3 now). It’s the most exhausting work and she wouldn’t change one thing about it. She absolutely loves it. Makes things way better with WFH now too so I can help when I can. You will never regret having these years with your kids.

like

You are right too.. I wouldn’t change anything about it. This is the most happy I have ever been.. it is exhausting but rewarding - more than any work that we do at clients

My wife quit her job and was a full time mother raising them (a few years ago she picked up a part time job). Financially, it was tough, but our kids are turning out great. If you have a spouse or SO who works full time, see if you can figure out a way to survive on one income. Or, with COVID being the biggest business transformation agent since WW2, you might be able to get a WFH job.

I am planning to post my resume again on the weekend!! Thank you for the inspiration.. I just needed that

It seems to me like you are not worried about financial stability of losing the job.. but contemplating just riding it out as stay-home-mum or try to put yourself out there again. Do what makes you happiest, a few years of employment break will not ruin your overall career if you decide to get back to working. Everyone has a different pace in life, so don’t feel like you’re going to be left behind!

You are a person and you were one before you became a parent. I love my kids. But they are not my whole life. I think that it is not healthy to make your children your entire world. Do not feel guilty for wanting a life of your own. Be an example to your kids by showing them how to manage professional and personal lives simultaneously. ❤️

My mom worked when we were growing up.. I loved that.. it made me more independent. I do plan to get back out there and do wonders! I needed something/someone to tell me something new - thanks!!

I feel this way about taking care of my spouse and household. So much time is taking from planning and preparing healthy meals, cleaning, dealing with admin, etc. Unfortunately, there’s no way we can survive on one salary. ☹️

MC1 are you from Ivy League, the fees are exorbitant and the loan balloons up pretty fast. 12k sounds about right for a couple with degree from elite schools.

Given you’re totally focused on your baby, it’s SHOCKING you were fired 🙄

Dir1 - I have no idea what I can tell you.

Spend the time with your kid. You will never get those years back. And it’s better for the child, too. Consulting is just an illusion. But if you really want to go back to it later you’ll find a way. You’re smart and strong enough.

Has anyone here used the "Read Scripture" app? It goes through the entire Bible and includes accompanying summary videos from "The Bible Project" (whose videos can also be found on YouTube). I love how it groups portions of Scripture and the videos are helpful for making meaningful connections with the text. I love these for myself, but they're super kid-friendly, too. Excellent support for your daily study. Enjoy!

Planning to move to Seattle, WA early next year with my H1. I know it's a great opportunity, but at the same time my worry is to leave my mom alone here at home. (Dad is no more and I'm a only child) I know once if she gets her B2 visa, I can take her there with me for 5-6 and then she has to be here for 3-4 months here in India. Theoretical it's feasible, but how much it's practically possible ? I know many might experienced this. Please advise

Hi Moms- Curious to get a sense of what your different parental leave policies look like and how you have liked them. My company gave 12 weeks paid and I felt it was woefully short for my first. Before having my second, I'm interested in pushing my company to increase the time and am curious to hear what other companies offer. Beyond just the time, was your company flexible? Is it the same for all parents? Did it feel like enough? Thank you!

Our 5 month old started daycare about 5 weeks ago. We’ve already had to keep her home for 2.5 of those 5 weeks due to catching various illnesses (croup, rsv, brinchiolitis, etc). Both my wife and I have been sick most of that time as well (gotten it from the baby). Wife is thinking we get a full time nanny for the next 4 months to help the baby build antibodies. Cost aside, is this feasible / worthwhile to go thru the effort / finding the right fit, only for 4 months?

Baby furniture. What is everyone doing? FTM and trying to figure out if it’s worth investing in very expensive nursery furniture. We were looking at the Natart furniture collection and the Silva collections. These both come in at about $2000-$2400. The furniture is high quality and grows with the child. Alternatively I could go the lower end route at get everything for like $800. Is that wise? I hear horror stories about low quality and paint chipping from the baby teething on the crib.
