Sure, I get you. But after a few rounds of interviews at a general market agency, with the last interviewer totally changing their tone once I answered their question about the kind of work my current agency does (pharma), I was told they went with a candidate with more “traditional” experience.
This was for a junior position, mind you.
This narrow focus in hiring is newer in pharma, but this industry as a whole is obsessed with putting people in boxes. Ask anyone working in PR, automobiles, beauty, shopper, etc. I heard even inhouse creative positions now are looking for people with client-side experience.

In-house wants those with brand side experience because they want to know you’ve drunk the kool-aid before and will have no problem doing so again.
Agency folks are more or less free thinkers and in-house teams need their employees to buy-in to whatever corporate wants regardless if it’s right or not. Having a rogue thinker in the their midsts can upset that dichotomy. Having worked brand side and gone back to agencies I will say that brand side was a real culture shock.
