I love my in-house job for the amazing WLB but I really miss the recognition and validation you get from partners/seniors in a big law firm setting. Lawyers don’t seem to matter in-house. Do I need to get over this narcissist/ego mentality and enjoy my life instead of wanting to back to toxicity?

Tomorrow go into the office. And when you leave at 5pm and get in your car, before you fire it up, take a moment. Look at your reflection in the rear view mirror. And remind yourself of how glad you are that you don’t have to work another 3 hours that evening, and work those hours 6 days a week…

I would say enjoy life, eventually somebody in house is going to have their job saved because of your diligence. You know that you are smart and doing the company a lot of good.

I think you had a different biglaw experience than I did and are having a different in-house experience than I am.

My company thrives on internal recognition and legal is not excluded from that. Maybe I got lucky, but I don’t think it is a universal trend for either firms or in-house and is moreso rooted in personality types and leadership styles.

If you are a personality type that needs recognition to thrive/feel fulfilled, I would discuss that with your manager to see if there are ways they can better meet that need and help you succeed.

Lawyers don’t seem to matter in house? What company do you work at lol. The company I work at would be a dumpster fire without our legal team 😅

Does anyone put money in VAs for a business client? What are the PROS/CONS/DIFFERENCES? Scenario: 5 doctors want principle protection first and growth of principle second. Each doctor is 20% vested. The business is cash rich and time horizon is 3 to 5 years. Thoughts/Advice welcome. I already have the potential company/product with no surrender period so I don’t need referrals but I’m thinking there will be at least one person who only reads part of this post and referred me anyway. :-( TIA

Has anyone recently made the switch to in house and now feel unorganized and less productive than when billing hours? For what it is worth, I’ve received good reviews and my superiors seems to be pleased with my work. Litigation was just so task based because of needing to hit billables, so without that requirement I feel a little like a fish out of water.

Reasonable base compensation expectations for regional general counsel position (direct report to CLO)? From what I can tell, company revenue is $500M - $1B (privately held company, so tough to know); construction industry (infrastructure / energy / mining); midwest headquarters. I’d be at the lower end of the experience requirements. Looked at MLA report, but looking for additional thoughts/opinions. Thanks!

I’ve been in an in-house role since the beginning of the year and just gave 2 weeks’ notice to leave for a much better paying and better titled position. The response has been very petty, to the point that I’ve been called unprofessional even after I asked the hiring attorney whether I could give longer notice at the current company’s request. Is this normal?

I’m currently at a medium sized tech startup. I was interviewing for a role that would be a bump in pay and title at a multinational public F50 company. At first, the hiring manager and head of legal were very complementary about my experience. Almost too much so. After a week of interviews with the team (softball-esq), I was informed that if I wanted to join, they would bring me on at a lower title. I’m not sure about comp yet. But if comp is still an increase + experience at a public..

Does anyone have recommendations for classes or trainings that helped you gain greater expertise in reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts, particularly sophisticated SaaS agreements? I came in-house with a biglaw litigation background and because of this feel lacking in competency compared to friends who came in house with transactional experience. Ditto to corporate governance. Would love some recommendations so that I can brush up in these areas and feel less like an imposter.

Does anyone know if you have to negotiate an automatic 3-4% increase in salary every year for inflation, etc. when getting an in-house position? Or is that fairly standard for most companies and HR just handles that internally at the start of every year?

Outside counsel has been prepping company witnesses for a trial in August. It is my subject area so I am supervising outside counsel. I did not, however, choose the counsel. He is doing a really awful job. Co counsel is better, but not great either. Higher ups love the firm… I do not want to micromanage, but I have genuine concerns about outside counsel’s ability to try this case. Trials are rare, and I just don’t think these guys have actually tried many cases. Cont. below…

Which companies pay the most for in-house legal / would find prior in-house VC experience useful? I run legal at a VC fund but am barely breaking $200K. I am ex V10 M&A and came from a traditional in-house gig (5 yrs total exp).

I think I may need to transition (eventually) out of my current role because my work/skills are getting very narrow. I don’t want to get pigeonholed. Ideal job for me would be corporate development related legal or product related work.

After reaching out to the general counsel on LinkedIn, I applied for an in-house job a month ago. I didn’t hear anything. A few days ago the general counsel reached out on LinkedIn and said she did not see my application in the mix but was hoping to and asked if I wanted to meet. I said I did apply, indicated I was interested in meeting, and asked if I could send my materials. She said yes and she would send me some times. I sent my materials and haven’t heard a thing. Any idea what is going on?
