I love the work I do but the partner is making my life miserable. She’s super disorganized which ends up impacting my weekends and I end up working at ungodly hours because she ALWAYS forgets deadlines or puts it off until the last minute. That’s not the worst thing, she is never thankful even when the client is “dazzled” by the work i do (her words not mine). She never acknowledges in front of the team (which isn’t the biggest issue) but i just want her to be more respectful. Any advice?

You get out. She won’t change. I spent 2.5 years working for “this” partner and it was absolute hell by the end of it

Same boat. I struggle to bill a full workweek a lot of the time yet I’m still working on evenings and weekends CONSTANTLY and all because of someone else’s poor time management. It’s infuriating. I’ve been trying to escape for a year and a half but the job market suuuuucks. Good luck to you! I say get out when you can! It’s definitely not like this everywhere!

I was in this boat for a while with a disaster partner. Just keep looking.

You have to manage it if you plan to stick around. It’ll take some time but it’s worth it. I keep track of the deadlines and follow up constantly. I no longer feel uncomfortable about it. I will email, call, and even text this partner if I need an urgent response. I ask whether they want me to prepare the first draft of X which is due on Y date. If they don’t answer, I keep following up. I’m also proactive about pulling work out of them when I know there’s a deadline or attendance on a matter, and that there will probably be an assignment coming up as well. I just ask “oh, you have court that day? What do you think you’ll need by then? When?” That way, they can’t sneak up on me at the last minute with what they need. It’s helpful to either have access to the deadlines/attendances ahead of time or to have some sort of file review where you can find these things out. I mean, even knowing how the week ahead will look is helpful. By being proactive and protecting my personal time, I’ve been able to keep up with the partner and minimize the amount of impact they have on my practice and on my life. I protect my personal time by not being available late at night or on weekends unless it’s an emergency. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t get weekends and nights off, I still work on my own stuff. But working on my own stuff is something I choose to do, and something I plan around.

Great advice! I will sit down this weekend and try to formulate a plan for our upcoming submission and cases. I love the work and it’s quite difficult getting into this practice area so i would hate to leave this great opportunity. At the same time, I am not in big law and am not paid enough to work literally 24*7 and be expected to work on all weekends (and not make any plans). Maybe i should communicate this but not sure if that ll come off as “lazy”?

Does anyone else wonder how people this disorganized managed to become partner?

@associate5 - I think if you are conscious about that, it’s already a good first step. I feel like she never realized this is an issue. Also you have some years to fix this - have timelines, delegate work, don’t micromanage and stick to the timeline(no matter what)! I thought I’m disorganized but i am surprisingly pretty good at making deadlines despite the heavy workload.

I filled my plate with so much work from other partners that I could not do the work of my super disorganized partner. I also took a draconian move to switch offices. My commute will suck but it will help since my partner loves facetime.

If your firm made her a partner it raises questions about the firm itself. If you like the work but hate the conditions, move to another firm where you can do the same work under better conditions.

She brings business and I guess that’s all firms care about. She moved to the firm 4-5 months before I did and I think they didn’t have a way of knowing about her work etiquette. But still, it just makes it impossible to take this issue to anyone at the firm as she’s quite tight with the management.

Arrow Icon

I’d ask to be assigned to a different partner and explain the situation.

Arrow Icon

I’ve found it helpful to manage up and it’s worked out fine for me so far. It’s helpful to treat the Partners that you work with as if they’re your clients as long as you stay organized. May help minimize the stress. Compliments are OK. Just know that most times people compliment you, they aren’t being sincere anyway.

I find my client being so chill and respectful. Vs some folks within Cognizant, at SM and even Director level are so insecure whether it’s an internal project discussion or when at client discussions, they hardly ever brings any originality to the table, even some of them have poor communication skills. I want to look up to leadership and learn from them, i want them to wow me with their knowledge than undermine my comments out of their insecurity. It’s difficult to look up to such leadership
